ABOUT THE ROLE
The Health and Safety Manager role provides corporate safety leadership and strategic planning to support TransAlta's values of safety, innovation, sustainability, respect and integrity. This position will lead contractor safety management and enable the delivery of HSSE requirements throughout the construction and growth projects lifecycle.
The Health and Manager will report to the Director, HSSE and is integral to ensure that health and safety standards, procedures and best practices are in place to identify and control high hazard energy. The role will provide subject matter expertise on human and organizational performance principles to foster a culture where we work and learn together to keep each other safe. The position will work collaboratively with generation teams, lead developers, project managers and supply chain partners to deliver our business today, advance TransAlta's growth plan and successfully execute capital projects.
This role is based out of our Head Office in Downtown Calgary, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Travel to sites will also be expected.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Reporting to the Director, HSSE, you will work to develop and implement a 1-to-3-year Contractor Safety Management Roadmap
- Review and audit contractor HSSE plans and support compliance with project lifecycle HSSE requirements
- Ensure design, procurement, and construction activities are carried out in accordance with state/provincial and federal OHS legislation and international standards
- Provide health and safety subject matter expertise on work authorization, work planning and the control of work process
- Continuously improve systems, processes, procedures and training to support the prevention of serious injuries and imbed human and organizational principles
- Support HSSE incident management, investigation process and learning teams
- Provide quarterly/annual contractor management program reporting and ensure metrics are effective
- Create a psychologically safe environment culture, and perform all work safely and within TransAlta's policies, procedures, standards, and collective agreements
- Monitor resourcing and closure of audit findings and corrective actions
- Build trust and strong relationships with key, cross-functional stakeholders and business sponsors through competency, collaboration, integrity, and transparency
- Lead multiple continuous improvement initiatives across all aspects of Health & Safety management
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following essential qualifications and experience:
- University Degree or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Science, Engineering and/or related specialty
- Professional designation preferred (CRSP, CSP, P.Eng, CIH, etc.), or equivalent
- 10+ years' experience in health and safety management in the energy industry, with project management and construction experience preferred
- Recognized as an expert in health and safety management systems and contractor safety management programs
- Experience in incident investigation and learning teams
- Thorough awareness and understanding of applicable health and safety regulations & industry best practices
- Demonstrated capability to understand power generation and renewable energy construction projects to create the link between the HSSE strategy and the business strategy
- Proficient in core office programs (i.e.: MS office. Power BI) and capable of learning key position specific applications
- Strong collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Ability to provide HSSE incident management support (after hours/shift weekend), as required
