Job Description
NREL's Technology Transfer Office (TTO) helps staff build the bridges and develop the relationships needed to innovate, protect, develop, license, and deploy cutting-edge, clean energy innovations and get them into the hands of end users where they can have a real and lasting impact. NREL's licensing opportunities, managed by its Technology Transfer Office, are available to businesses with the technical and financial resources to turn early-stage technology into commercial products.
Specific duties include:

Basic Qualifications
Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Strong leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with U.S. federal policies, regulations and statutes applicable to licensing and commercialization of technologies is preferred, including commercialization of copyrightable software assets.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Professional III / Annual Salary Range: $81,500 - $146,700
NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

Job Description
NREL's Technology Transfer Office (TTO) helps staff build the bridges and develop the relationships needed to innovate, protect, develop, license, and deploy cutting-edge, clean energy innovations and get them into the hands of end users where they can have a real and lasting impact. NREL's licensing opportunities, managed by its Technology Transfer Office, are available to businesses with the technical and financial resources to turn early-stage technology into commercial products.
Specific duties include:
- Identify, investigate, analyze and negotiate licensing opportunities to grant or receive permission to use intellectual property rights, including software, patents and trademarks.
- Plan and implement marketing campaigns.
- Negotiate license agreements and ensures adherence to Bayh-Dole Act and DOE regulations.
- Manage portfolios of software titles and/or patents held by the organization and acts as a resource for intellectual property issues.
- Evaluate early-stage inventions for the commercial potential of new intellectual property.
- Recommend intellectual property protection and commercialization strategies.
- Advise on appropriate deployment strategies for software technologies between open-source release, commercial licensing, or other approaches aimed at enabling effective utilization of the technology
- Support programs such as Energy I-Corps, FedTech and the DOE Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF) which promote commercialization.
- Develop and maintains knowledge of applicable markets for NREL technologies within the wind/water power, mobility sciences, hydrogen power and fuel cells, and other renewable energy areas.
- Develop market-based valuations for NREL technologies.
- Develop licensing leads for promising NREL technologies and negotiates license agreements for both patentable and copyrightable subject matter.
- Coordinate review of license agreement with NREL legal office to ensure terms are legally sufficient.
- Contribute to NREL's commercialization leadership and visibility by participating in the DOE Technology Transfer Working Group, professional societies, and industry outreach activities.
- Participate in the implementation of TTO and DOE initiatives and programs.
- Maintain records in IP database, participate in requirements development for new systems.
- Address license compliance issues.
- Coordinate with NREL's Technology Partnership Agreement team on review of IP terms related to patentable and copyrightable subject matter within Strategic Partnership Projects and Cooperative Research & Development Agreement (CRADAs).
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Conversant with stakeholder and partner goals, able to tailor service accordingly and maintain positive relationships; able to edit templates and apply judgement to offer alternatives to agreement language, manage complex transactions and navigate ambiguous situations requiring a high level of judgement and strong negotiation skills.
- Able to recommend and implement some changes in connection with process improvement initiatives.
- Relevant experience includes assessment of intellectual property for commercial potential, negotiation and oversight of intellectual property and other technology transfer agreements, applying legal principles associated with contracting and intellectual property matters, as well as marketing of intellectual property for commercialization.
