Director of Sterile Processing

Summary:
Reporting to the Vice President of Surgical Services, the incumbent is responsible for monitoring and ensuring excellence in the 24 hour day to day operations of System Sterile Processing. The Director provides direct oversight/ supervision and is fiscally responsible for both operational and capital budget, staffing, scheduling, evaluations and hiring with oversight. Ensures BHS and site specific departmental adherence to compliance policies, and any and all applicable laws and requirements of regulatory agencies such as: Joint Commission, DPH, AAMI and CDC. Coordinates all Quality Management /Performance Improvement activities in collaboration with the Directors, Professional staff and site-specific management teams. In partnership with unit educator, oversees educational activities and training programs within the department. Sits on related system wide and site specific hospital committees, drives process improvement by leading employee teams and incorporating Lean/Six Sigma concepts, supports improved quality and operational efficiency, workplace and patient safety as well as staff development.
Job Responsibilities:
1) Operational Processes BHS: Monitors and ensures excellence in the BHS departmental and processes for the provision of quality products, process efficiency and workflow, and standardization to meet the needs of servicing departments. Oversees staffing models for alignment with operational volumes, trends identified and business requirements.
2) Leadership and Human Resources: Promotes the philosophy, core values, vision, operating principles and behaviors of Baystate Health and are applied within the department and units. The Director leads a positive work environment that facilitates the delivery of excellent quality products to regional customer/departments and patients. Staff are highly engaged as evidenced by relevant metrics. The Director supports core principals of quality, initiates and manages change providing support and resources to staff. Communicates and holds direct reports and staff accountable. Facilitates a collaborative multidisciplinary approach to problem solving. Shares new information, problem solves with the BH teams, and presents alternatives or solutions for discussion.
3) Financial Growth and Stewardship: The Director is accountable to manage within budget as evidenced by metrics. Stewards financial resources and promotes growth by developing business plans and budget for their unit per organizational goals and other relevant factors. Establishes expectations with and holds direct reports and staff accountable for efficient standardized processes. Responds to budget variances in a proactive timely manner.
4) Collaboration: Creates and maintains an environment supporting trust , respect, integrity, communication and collaboration. Creates opportunities for multidisciplinary forums in order to problem solve and facilitate planning. Represents BHS units in perioperative services committee and meeting forums. Maintains collaborative interdepartmental relationships and open communication with surgeons, Unit Managers, Unit Service Leads, Regional Leaders, and all clinical and ancillary support areas.
5) Management of the Environment: The Director is a leader who is highly visible on both the units and regional departments. The Director is responsible for development of strategies for process improvement. Monitors and creates policies and procedures that align with process improvement. Analyzes and follows through on all operations issues ensuring effective resolution. Assess customer needs and structure services provided to meet those needs. Maintains and provides quality sterile kits or procedural trays and correct case carts are provided based on surgical procedures being performed in collaboration with OR Service Leads and regional staff. Establishes an ongoing plan for equipment and instrumentation management including repairs and maintenance in accordance with manufacturers' guidelines.
6) Ensures the clinical and clerical competence of regional staff through a consistent education program, interaction, observation, and ongoing evaluation and feedback from other members of the health care team.
7) Adheres to system and department compliance policies and any and all applicable laws and regulations.
Required Work Experience:
3 years experience in service line management, product, vendor/supply management. Knowledge and experience with sterilization processes, high level disinfection operating room procedures, flexible endoscopy and process improvement tools/applications.
Preferred Work Experience:
Sterile Processing/ Quality Improvement/ and/or Allied technical experience.
Skills/Competencies:
1) Oversees staffing parameters to support operational needs of the units and schedules .
2) Ability to manage and oversee budget, identify and resolve variances
3) Ability to evaluate staff and direct reports performance and provide performance feedback evaluations annually.
4) Facilitates workflow processes on a continuum.
5) Ensures equipment and instrumentation maintenance is accomplished in an ongoing scheduled cycle
6) Excellent verbal and written communication skills
7) Experience in directing the activities of others, and high level ability to mentor and teach.
8) Demonstrated change agent, self starter and team player who possesses substantial interpersonal skills.
9) Experience in leading process improvement projects and general experience in leading committees
10) Posses an understanding of safety management, materials management, and infection control.
11) Innovative with processes and workflow
12) Attends Leadership / Management education / training as identified by VP of Surgical Services
13) Observes all health and safety requirements, maintains certification and all training as necessary.
14) Active participation in professional organizations: Maintains knowledge of AAMI standards of practice, JC standards, DPH standards and infection control standards
15) Will obtain certification in Sterile Processing Distribution Management within 18 months
