About the Department of Neurosurgery

The Department of Neurosurgery is part of a highly integrated neuroscience program that includes neurosurgeons, neurologists, PM&R physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists and other specialists. The neurological surgery residency was accredited in 2022. There are opportunities for collaborative research with Dell Medical School faculty members as well as a wide range of research faculty at The University of Texas. There is an Ambulatory Surgery Center with the capacity to build an Ambulatory Spine Service. This will be in conjunction with neuromuscular neurologists and PM&R specialists. The spinal operating rooms at Ascension Dell Seton Hospital and Ascension Medical Center at Austin are fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. Ascension Dell Seton Medical Center houses Austin's Level 1 trauma program as well as a Comprehensive Stroke program.

About the Minimally Invasive Spine Neurosurgeon Position

The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking an exceptional board certified or board eligible spine fellowship trained neurosurgeon or orthopaedic surgeon at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank to join the Department of Neurosurgery.

This is a full-time faculty position in the Department of Neurosurgery at Dell Medical School. The faculty member will be responsible for the growth of a minimally invasive spine program associated with the ASC, DSMC and SMCA. The collaboration with neurology, PM&R, and outpatient physical therapy will form the core spine program. It is understood that the neurosurgeon will also care for patients with more complex spine conditions that will require inpatient care.

Qualifications

Required:

  • MD degree with Board Certification (or Board Eligibility if within 2 years of residency) in Neurological Surgery or Orthopaedic Surgery.
  • Candidates with fellowship training in minimally invasive spine surgery (MIS) are encouraged to apply.
  • Interest in clinical research related to spinal disorders.
  • Eligibility for appointment at the (Clinical) Assistant or Associate Professor level.

  • Effective professional management skills, including the ability to plan, organize and schedule work in an efficient and productive manner, focusing on key priorities and meeting deadlines.

  • Sound judgment in decision-making, and importantly clinical judgment.
  • Ability to learn and apply new information, knowledge and experiences in a timely manner.

  • Plan, promote, demonstrate, recommend and coordinate high standards of evidence-based medical practice.
