ABOUT THE ROLE

Are you passionate about shaping public policy and fostering meaningful relationships? TransAlta is seeking a dynamic Advisor, External Affairs to join our team, reporting directly to the Manager of Stakeholder & Indigenous Relations. This pivotal role is integral to our External Affairs team, where you'll support and enhance our advocacy and relationship-building efforts across Canada.

In this role, you'll have the exciting opportunity to:

  • Broaden and deepen connections with senior officials and elected representatives
  • Champion strong public policy solutions that align with both business and regional interests
  • Collaborate closely with a dedicated team to drive impactful initiatives


Based at our Head Office in Calgary, this position offers the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule, with in-office days from Tuesday to Thursday and remote work options on Mondays and Fridays. Occasional travel will be required to engage with stakeholders and represent TransAlta at various events.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Build and maintain relationships with government officials and political offices in TransAlta's current areas of operation
  • Support operations and future growth projects by tracking emerging policy issues related to TransAlta's business objectives
  • Provide timely counsel and briefing material to decision-makers within the company
  • Develop strategic advocacy strategies in regions in which TransAlta operates
  • Develop and execute issues management plans to support opportunity development and risk mitigation
  • Support and strengthen TransAlta's reputation as a responsible, publicly engaged corporation, critical to the energy sector in the jurisdictions in which we operate, through participation in government-related meetings, consultations and initiatives
  • Coordinate and collaborate with key internal stakeholders on files to support efficient and effective engagement strategies
  • Support local stakeholder relations engagement


WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Economics, Business, or Political Science
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working for an organization involved in policy development and/or government relations
  • Comprehensive understanding and practical experience in electricity and related energy markets
  • Demonstrated proficiency in cultivating and managing strategic relationships
  • Track record of successfully building coalitions to support organizational objectives
  • Proficiency in managing complex issues and navigating challenging situations
  • Demonstrates sound judgement and discretion in decision-making processes
  • Thorough understanding of the policy development lifecycle and its practical implications;
  • Proven ability to effectively manage stakeholders across various levels and backgrounds
  • Strong analytical skills for processing information and making informed decisions
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including adeptness in presentations and public speaking engagements
