The UCLA Library seeks a highly collaborative, user-focused professional for the position of Research Support and Impact Librarian. Reporting to the Director of Sciences User Engagement, the incumbent will provide support to UCLA faculty, researchers, students, and other stakeholders in assessing and measuring the impact of their work. In addition, the incumbent will collaborate with department colleagues on projects around scholarly identity and broader research enterprise support.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:
  • Assist UCLA faculty and researchers in assessing and communicating the impact of their work using a range of bibliometric and altmetric approaches;
  • Assist UCLA faculty and researchers with creating and fully utilizing scholarly identity and visibility tools;
  • Work with UCLA faculty and researchers to assess and select publishing outlets;
  • Serve as a resource for UCLA faculty and researchers on the responsible use of research metrics;
  • Collaborate with Open Science and Collections Librarians in Sciences User Engagement and with colleagues across the Library in broader scholarly communications and data projects;
  • Engage with one or more academic departments in either the Division of Physical Sciences or the Division of Life Sciences in the College and provide subject specific outreach, curricular, and research support;
  • Provide general reference and research support for students, faculty and researchers in the sciences in collaboration with Sciences User Engagement colleagues;
  • Maintain awareness of changes and trends within relevant disciplines and campus programs;
  • Actively contribute to User Engagement cross-departmental collaborative teams and Library wide initiatives; and
  • Work with Library Development to identify, cultivate, and steward donors, collections, and gift funds.

General Information

Professional librarians at UCLA are academic appointees. Librarians at UCLA are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This is a represented position. They are entitled to appropriate professional leave, two days per month of vacation leave, one day per month of sick leave, and all other benefits granted to non-faculty academic personnel. The University has an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of group health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans in addition to other benefits. Relocation assistance may be provided.

Appointees to the librarian series at UC shall have professional backgrounds that demonstrate a high degree of creativity, teamwork, and flexibility. Additionally, librarians are evaluated on consistency of performance, grasp of library methods, command of their subjects, continued growth in their fields, judgment, leadership, originality, ability to work effectively with others, and ability to relate their functions to the more general goals of the library and the University. Such background will normally include a professional degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science graduate program. In addition to professional competence and quality of service within the library in the primary job, advancement in the librarian series requires professional involvement and contributions outside of the library, and/or university and community service, and/or scholarly activities. Candidates must show evidence or promise of such contributions.

Description of Unit

User Engagement (UE) brings together public services librarians and staff across three major divisions (Arts, Music, and Powell; Management/Humanities and Social Sciences; and Sciences) and four cross-departmental teams (Collections, Outreach, Research, and Teaching and Learning). The UE group is a matrixed organization designed to enhance library services through a cross-disciplinary and cross-functional approach.

The Sciences division is comprised of librarians and staff from three library locations. The unit supports research, teaching, and clinical care in a wide variety of settings and at all levels (undergraduate through post-graduate), including specialized collections and services for health, physical, life, and applied sciences and engineering. The team consists of 7 FTE librarians and 1 FTE instructional and outreach specialist.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library or Information Science required at the time of hire; OR Master's degree (or other advanced degree) in Information Sciences or related field at the time of hire and work experience in a library setting.
  • Experience with or interest in expanding knowledge of bibliometrics.
  • Experience with or interest in expanding knowledge of research assessment approaches.
  • Experience with or interest in scientific practice in either physical sciences and/or life sciences.
  • Familiarity with the research life cycle and information literacy principles.
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially in a team-based environment with a diverse population of faculty, students, colleagues, and administrators at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a leader and team member with library colleagues, managing multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Demonstrated evidence of initiative and flexibility.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, time, and project management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
