Job Description Summary
GE Aviation's Hybrid Electric Mechanical Design team is developing components for future advanced propulsion systems. The Senior Design Engineer for Electromagnetics will play a critical role in the Hybrid Electric team, demonstrating leadership in developing advanced technologies, executing business priorities, operational strategy, and engaging across GE globally and with industrial and academic partners. The Senior Design Engineer contributes directly to GE Aviation's hybrid electric capability including the development of the joint NASA Electric Powertrain Flight Demonstrator program and GE's RISE (Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines) program. They will be a key member of the electric machine design team within GE Aviation. He/she will contribute to the development of new technology for the aviation application space.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Perform the electromagnetic analysis for electric machine design and EMI.
  • Lead/support the electromagnetic design of electric machines, including the design and design support for system/components for integration of a motor/generator to support electrified propulsion.
  • Develop new applications of technology for product development of electrical power generation, conversion, transmission and distribution components and systems for advanced aviation applications.
  • Partner with electrical system, mechanical and thermal, manufacturing and test teams to advance the development of hybrid electric systems and electric machines.
  • Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.
  • In-depth understanding of key business drivers; uses this understanding to accomplish own work. In-depth understanding of how work of own team integrates with other teams and contributes to the area.
  • Influence the development of strategy for motor/generator design, including control of resources and influences policy formulation.
  • Interprets simple internal and external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve products, processes or services. Stays informed of industry trends that may inform work.
  • Uses high level of judgment to make decisions and handle complex tasks or problems in areas of operational, product management, manufacturing, technology or engineering. Has ability to assess quality of information given and ask pertinent questions to stakeholders. Able to offer new solutions to problems outside of set parameters and is able to construct and provide recommendations. Uses multiple internal and some external sources outside of own function to help arrive at a decision.
  • May lead functional teams or projects with minimal resource requirements, risk, and/or complexity. Communicates difficult concepts and may influence others' options on particular topics. May guide others to consider a different point of view.


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited university or college
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in disciplinary engineering and science
  • Electric Machine electromagnetic design experience, preferably in the hybrid electric space.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.


Desired Characteristics
  • Prior work experience in aerospace power generation and conversion products, aviation electrical power system, high frequency electro-magnetic design, embedded controls for power electronics, and transient/dynamic electric system theory and analysis.
  • Strong experience in 2D/3D electromagnetic finite element analysis, preferably ANSYS (Maxwell 2D/Maxwell 3D).
  • Strong technical background in transient/dynamic electric system theory and analysis.
  • Experience in Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) of electric propulsion systems.
  • Experience in Matlab/Simulink and/or Python.
  • Experience in validating electric machine technology through prototyping and laboratory testing.
  • Familiarity with CAD (Computer Aided Design) tools.
  • Familiarity with converter duty and high voltage electrical insulation for electrical machine applications.
  • Familiarity in inverter machine system integration.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems.
  • Ability to document, plan, market, and execute programs.
  • Established project management skills.
