The Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering seeks applicants for an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of Practice to teach courses and provide leadership of the Humanitarian Engineering (HE) Program by serving as its Program Director This position is a professional track (non-tenure-track), 9-month, full-time appointment with responsibilities in teaching courses and administration of the HE Program. Opportunities to augment the 9-month salary by teaching in the summer may be possible based on department needs. The Department is interested in identifying candidates who would become long-term members of our community through multi-year teaching contracts. The university supports the career development of professional instructional track faculty with mentoring programs and defined guidelines for promotion.
The initial term of the position is up to three-years, with the opportunity for extension to additional years based on achieving certain targets such as increasing enrollment in HE.
Examples of courses that this individual would teach include, but are not limited to, the three-course sequence of Projects with Underserved Communities (ES277K Project Development with Underserved Communities, ES277L Project Design with Underserved Communities , ES177L Project Implementation with Underserved Communities) and Humanitarian Engineering Seminar (ME179M) and other courses in Mechanical Engineering depending on the candidate's technical expertise.
Additional teaching and administrative responsibilities include supervising graduate teaching assistants, organizing and managing project teams, developing relationships with international NGOs including visiting potential international partners, crisis management, fundraising, coordinating with other UT Austin offices such as TX Global, and HE program recruiting and expansion.

Qualifications
The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field, or a relevant MS degree and substantial teaching or industrial/government experience. Individuals should have knowledge of low-resourced communities, particularly in low-income countries, and designing technical solutions for these communities.
Experience working in development or relief organizations such as USAID, the Red Cross, or UNHCR is highly desirable. We are seeking a candidate with a demonstrated commitment to education and knowledge of teaching methods that actively engage all students in learning, and the ability to work effectively with all students, colleagues, and international partners.
