Description:

Tenstorrent is leading the industry on cutting-edge AI technology, revolutionizing performance expectations, ease of use, and cost efficiency. With AI redefining the computing paradigm, solutions must evolve to unify innovations in software models, compilers, platforms, networking, and semiconductors. Our diverse team of technologists have developed a high performance RISC-V CPU from scratch, and share a passion for AI and a deep desire to build the best AI platform possible. We value collaboration, curiosity, and a commitment to solving hard problems. We are growing our team and looking for contributors of all seniorities.

We are seeking a Senior Thermal Design Engineer to lead the design and productization of advanced cooling solutions for high-performance PCIe Cards and multi-chip Server Systems. This role requires an engineer with deep expertise in thermal simulations, air and liquid cooling systems, and thermal validation techniques. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to develop efficient thermal management strategies for AI computing platforms.

This role ison-site, based out of Toronto, Canada.

We welcome candidates at various experience levels for this role. During the interview process, candidates will be assessed for the appropriate level, and offers will align with that level, which may differ from the one in this posting.

Responsibilities:
  • Design and validate complex thermal solutions for high-power AI computing systems, including PCIe Cards and multi-chip Server Systems.
  • Conduct thermal simulations (CFD modeling) using tools such as Ansys IcePak, FloTHERM, or SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation.
  • Develop and optimize air-cooled and liquid-cooled solutions, incorporating vapor chambers, thermal interface materials (TIMs), heat pipes, fans, pumps, heat exchangers, and chillers.
  • Perform product-level reliability testing, including thermal cycling, environmental chamber testing, and long-term thermal stability analysis.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to define mechanical and thermal requirements, review designs, and validate test plans.
  • Provide on-site supplier support for critical builds, prototype testing, and manufacturing validation.
  • Manage complex BOMs and product lifecycles in a PLM system, ensuring seamless integration of thermal components with mechanical and electrical designs.
  • Work with world-class suppliers, contractors, and test labs to ensure high-quality manufacturing and testing processes.
  • Generate detailed engineering documentation, including test reports, design specifications, and best practice guidelines.
  • Lead thermal design reviews and provide technical mentorship to junior engineers.

Experience & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Thermal Engineering or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in thermal design, preferably for high-performance electronics or AI computing systems.
  • Expertise in cooling solution design, including heat dissipation technologies and airflow management.
  • Proficiency in thermal simulation tools such as Ansys IcePak, FloTHERM, or SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation.
  • Experience with advanced cooling technologies, including vapor chambers, TIMs, heat pipes, liquid cooling loops, and high-power thermal solutions.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Deep understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and engineering drawing creation.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with an ability to optimize designs based on real-world constraints.
  • Fluent in Mandarin and English for effective communication with local and international teams.
  • Frequent supplier visits required in Taiwan, with international travel up to 10% for supplier meetings and critical design reviews.
