DEAN OF STUDENTS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Connecticut Certificate as Intermediate Administrator
  • Masters degree-major focus appropriate to responsibilities
  • Successful experience as a middle school educator
  • Such additions and alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable.
  • Demonstrated successful leadership experience


REPORTS TO: Building Principal

JOB GOAL: To contribute effectively to an administrative team which supports a safe, growth directed, and academically challenging experience for middle school children, which provides leadership for program and student services, and which is responsive to parent and community needs and expectations.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Shares with the Principal the responsibility for protecting the health and welfare of students
  • Implements Board policies and regulations, school goals, and performance responsibilities in order to ensure that all the students for whom the Dean is responsible are provided every opportunity to reach their full potential
  • Works closely with students and parents to ensure that school rules and regulations are understood and followed
  • Makes recommendations for appropriate revisions of policies and rules affecting the students' life in the school
  • Assists in developing and administering practices dealing with campus control and security Oversees all matters of student attendance
  • Assists with campus supervision
  • Administers the extra curricular program of the school, and responds to student initiated requests for specific new extra curricular clubs, activities, and programs
  • Has general supervisory responsibility for student activities, athletic events, programs of student orientation, and similar activities
  • Supervises development, maintenance, and distribution of student calendars, handbooks, curriculum guides, schedules, bulletins, etc
  • Supervises all dances and evening school activities
  • Oversees the transition and scheduling process from school to school and grade level to grade level
  • Conceptualizes and implements a block schedule responsive to the needs of an evolving teamed middle school
  • Meets with teachers to study common problems, reduce conflict situations, or provide special guidance
  • Meets with students and parents to find alternative education programs for students in need
  • Oversees the substitute teacher process
  • Works with Principal to evaluate selected Middlebrook staff in compliance with the Wilton Public Schools Appraisal Plan
  • Assists in providing appropriate staff development.
  • Accepts additional assignments in the role of Dean as directed by the Principal


PROGRAM
  • Facilitates curriculum coordination appropriate for a middle school
  • Implements and interprets district and state testing programs
  • Works with instructional leaders in assessing student learning needs and assists in developing programs and/or courses designed to meet those needs


STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES/SPECIAL EDUCATION
  • Coordinates the services of guidance, social worker, psychologist and other staff as needed to provide an age appropriate model for the developmental support of the middle school child
  • Counsels individual students and, when necessary, makes appropriate referrals for testing, guidance, social work of psychological counseling
  • Supervises the registration, classifications, scheduling and testing of students


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 261 days. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Normal office physical demands; ability to be present throughout the physical plant of the high school; ability to travel to all school sites throughout the district as needed

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel and in concert with the WASA collective bargaining agreement.
