Position Summary

The Commercial Banking Senior Underwriter will be responsible for managing the credit portfolio and underwriting team of the Commercial Banking Group and assisting Commercial Bankers, EVP Commercial Banking, Commercial Banking President, and Senior Credit Officers in evaluating the financial wherewithal of existing and potential commercial banking clients with a focus towards assessing creditworthiness, repayment capacity, and the degree of risk involved in extending credit to diversified commercial and industrial middle market and large corporate entities. The Senior Underwriter will lead the underwriting team in the preparation of commercial banking pipeline updates, portfolio maturity schedules, portfolio administration and monitoring tasks, screening memos, lending committee reports, and loan request presentations to loan approval committees and the Bank's Board of Directors. Responsible for leading the loan review function of the Commercial Bank whether internal or external in gathering information and making recommendations in partnership with the EVP Commercial Banking to the respective committees. Provides leadership, management, training, prioritizing workload and maintains production data of the commercial banking team.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Generate financial ratios using computer programs and customized financial models to evaluate customer's financial status and repayment capacity.
  • Spread, analyze and evaluate financial information to determine financial strength, adequacy of cash flow, the probability of full repayment, determination if collateral or a guarantor is needed to adequately secure the loan, and the degree of risk involved in extending credit.
  • Perform stress-testing scenarios for diversified types of loans to assess the degree of risk involved in extending credit when negative changes occur.
  • Consult with customers and/or commercial bankers to obtain and verify financial due diligence and reporting items.
  • Partner in the structuring of loan proposals and repayment plans based on credit applicant's financial condition, payment history, and other relevant factors.
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of screening memos and loan approval requests for presentation to loan approval committees and the Bank's Board of Directors.
  • Review financial information and other credit decisioning materials to accurately evaluate the financial condition of the borrower and the borrower's compliance with loan agreement requirements. This includes covenant compliance certification, borrowing base verification, and risk rating appropriateness.
  • Perform regular loan portfolio reviews to assess credit quality and risk rating appropriateness.
  • Provide additional assistance to commercial bankers as requested. This may include preparation of industry updates, presentation materials, etc.
  • Assist the Commercial Banking leadership, CCO and SCOs in preparation of committee reports and presentations.
  • Point of contact in the delivery of loan review and examinations requests.
  • Partners with the credit and loan administration team to ensure that new and existing loans are properly documented, compliant to regulation, properly structured and lien positions are appropriately perfected.

  • Other Responsibilities

    • Support and promote the Bank's vision, mission and core values, organizational structure and policies and procedures.
    • Participates in job specific training and other various bank training programs as required.
    • Ensure compliance with all bank policies and procedures, as well as all applicable state and federal banking regulations, which includes BSA, CIP, and OFAC requirements as they apply to these departmental functions.
    • Other duties as assigned or requested by Commercial Bank leadership.

    Experience and Requirements
    • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in business (MBA preferred)
    • Minimum of 15 years of experience in commercial banking or other relevant financial institution experience focused on credit assessment
    • Prior formal credit training is required
    • Deep knowledge of financial analysis programs and financial modeling
    • Robust knowledge of accounting principles
    • Familiarity with reviewing legal documentation (loan agreements, security agreements, collateral agreements, guaranty agreements, subordination agreements, syndicated agreements, forbearance agreements, etc.)
    • Ability to work extended hours as required
    • Ability lead the underwriting team and assign/ delegate responsibilities to Commercial Banking Associates
    • Self-starting team player
    • Aptitude for math and performing calculations, cash flow analysis, and ratios is essential
    • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
    • Good organizational skills are essential
    • Attention to detail and mental concentration are necessary for accurately performing tasks with frequent interruptions
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast paced, high volume, work environment with accuracy and minimal supervision.
    • Display a positive team working attitude with associates in all departments.
    • Ability to determine key priorities, clearly communicate the priorities and ensure resources are properly aligned.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are necessary for maintaining effective relationships with senior management, bankers, credit administration and lending assistants.
    • Individual should be able to handle high pressure situations and a stressful atmosphere and remain composed and focused.
    • Ability to provide a strong, compassionate and visible leadership, which fosters positive attitudes and trust among employees, customers, and prospects.
    • Must be able to be physically present in the Bank to perform job duties.
