Job Description

The Infection Control Prevention and Control (IPAC) department is an integral part of William Osler Health System. As a member of this department, the IPAC practitioner facilitates infection control activities and is considered a change agent with the primary goal of reducing risk of hospital acquired infections (HAI). The IPAC practitioner directly reports to the IPAC Manager.

Accountabilities:
  • Perform surveillance activities, collect, collate, analyze and interpret data to facilitate prevention and control of hospital associated infections, outbreaks, adverse events and other outcomes of epidemiological significance and implement control measures as required.
  • Develop and provide education and training in infection prevention and control to healthcare providers, physicians and volunteers
  • Conduct follow-up on all exposure situations; coordinates and provides leadership in outbreak management
  • Assess, analyze and implement protocols and practices in compliance with provincial and federal infection control directives and guidelines
  • Act as a liaison and subject matter expert to all external and internal stakeholders
  • Act as a coach and mentor to other IPAC staff, visitors, physicians, patients and families
  • Develop and communicate policies, best practice guidelines and provide education to patients/staff and physicians
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety and change management activities and implement appropriate infection control measures as required
  • Conducts themselves in a manner that supports a respectful, healthy, and safe workplace environment and in all interactions
  • All other duties as assigned


Qualifications
  • A degree in health related discipline preferred (e.g. nursing, laboratory, epidemiology, and other allied health)
  • Membership with Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Canada required
  • Current registration and in good standing with a regulatory body in Ontario
  • Previous experience as an Infection Control Practitioner is preferred in an acute care setting
  • Completion of an entry Level 1 Infection Control course
  • Certified in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) preferred or commitment within 2 years
  • Knowledge and/or job related experience in health care practices
  • Strong knowledge of infectious diseases, microbiology, epidemiology and statistics
  • Proficiency in the use of computer databases, spreadsheets, Meditech and literature search
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Self-directed, well-organized and detail-oriented
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills

  • Excellent attendance, punctuality and work record
  • Demonstrated skill in teaching and strong written communication skills
  • Able to participate in the IPAC on-call rotation and travel between sites


Additional Information

Hours: Days/Evenings, including weekends and statutory holidays (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)

Salary:
Minimum: $49.63 per hour
Maximum: $61.75 per hour
