Position Title: Controls Engineer - Machining Operations

Overview:
We are looking for a Controls Engineer to provide electrical and automation support to ensure the smooth operation of Heavy Duty Engine (HDE) machining lines. These lines include components such as Engine Blocks, Cylinder Heads, Connecting Rods, Liners, as well as Turbo Machining and Assembly systems. This role is key to maintaining equipment uptime and involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams including Maintenance Supervisors, Mechanical Engineers, Skilled Trades personnel, and support staff from Operations and Quality.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Diagnose and adjust software and hardware systems for PLCs, CNCs, HMIs, and robotic equipment.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot device-level control networks.
  • Support and optimize servo and variable frequency drive (VFD) systems, both hardware and software.
  • Integrate and maintain machining data acquisition systems, ensuring connectivity with higher-level control platforms.
  • Apply advanced control technologies to enhance machining processes and improve system efficiency.
  • Define specifications and contribute to the design and commissioning of new machining equipment.
  • Provide hands-on technical assistance to machining operations, addressing issues as they arise.
  • Partner with Skilled Trades teams, Process Engineers, and Supervisors to support diagnostic and repair activities in CNC and assembly machining areas.
  • Aid maintenance teams in interpreting technical schematics and OEM manuals for effective troubleshooting and fault resolution.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a similar discipline. In lieu of a degree, 8+ years of hands-on experience in a relevant role will be considered.
  • Solid understanding of control systems architecture and industrial automation components (e.g., PLCs, HMIs, motion control, robotics, and vision systems).
  • Strong familiarity with PC-based systems and mainstream software tools.
  • Working knowledge of industrial networks and database integration.
  • Understanding of applicable electrical and safety codes and standards.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to interpret, modify, and generate technical drawings related to building systems and production equipment.

Preferred Experience:
  • Hands-on experience with Siemens Step 7, TIA Portal, Siemens 840D controls, and Siemens VFDs and servo systems.
  • Familiarity with Fanuc robots, Cognex vision systems, and Trumpf laser equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Allen-Bradley automation systems.
  • Understanding of fluid-based systems, including hydraulics, pneumatics, and cooling/lubrication.
  • Knowledge of machining-related processes such as metal cutting, press monitoring, part identification, fastening, and part washing.
  • Experience using maintenance and enterprise systems such as Maximo, SAP, and Microsoft Outlook.

Salary Range: $85,000-90,000

The actual salary offered is dependent on various factors including, but not limited to, location, the candidate's combination of job-related knowledge, qualifications, skills, education, training, and experience
