Job Description

As Specialist, Electrical Systems, you will be responsible for providing technical direction and analysis of marine electrical systems to ensure compliance with regulatory and statutory requirements, and that they function as per the design intent. More specifically, you will:
  • Undertake a full system analysis to determine if a seagoing vessel's electrical system is fit for purpose and can function without interruption to ensure safe and reliable operations.
  • Performtechnical analysis from power generation into the entire electrical network capability and redundancy tolerance in the event of a failure.
  • Liaise directly with design agents and suppliers to ensure technical compliance with specifications, and coordinate the scheduling of hardware, software, and associated specialist commissioning support to deliver the project on time and within budget.
  • Interface daily and directly with Davie's production and management staff to ensure all the respective departments are aware of the sequencing and coordination of the automation system.
  • Provide senior project management with regular progress scheduling and milestone achievements.
  • Attend factory acceptance tests (FATs).
  • Determine the level of additional support required for either installation or commissioning of a system.
  • Liaise directly with Davie's Quality Control Department to ensure full compliance with our established procedures.
  • Actively participate in the design of the power generation, shore power conversion, and the broader electrical network.
  • Actively participate in the design and function of switchboards, starters, and motor control centres, and collaborate closely with the automation team to ensure all required control and monitoring I/Os are captured in the I/O list.
  • Provide the necessary skills and experience required to be able to review a technical bid and contribute to the overall understanding of a bid's requirements within the context of a vessel's electrical system.
  • Interpret a bid into the actual requirements onboard and contribute effectively to the evaluation team in terms of manpower, material, and scheduling elements.
  • Ensure that any technical changes are evaluated, documented, and approved by the client and regulatory authorities.
  • Ensure that all system drawings are maintained fully up-to-date and distributed to the client and regulatory authorities as needed.
  • Attend vessel sea trials and undertake an active lead role in the development of sea trial procedures and subsequent proving activities to the satisfaction of the client and regulatory authorities.

Qualifications
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 15 years' experience in marine electrical engineering, either at sea or in a shipyard.
  • Good working knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Full working knowledge of typical vessel systems, such as:
    • Marine diesel engines;
    • Electrical power generation up to 11 kV;
    • Power management and load control;
    • Distributed electrical networks and controls down to 24 VDC;
    • Large motor variable-speed drives;
    • Propulsion equipment, including bow thrusters, azimuthing thrusters, and CPP systems;
    • HVAC and refrigeration systems;
    • Fresh water production systems;
    • Sewage and sanitary systems;
    • Watertight sliding doors and hatches;
    • Marine boilers;
    • 3D environment systems;
    • Commissioning procedures;
    • Technical writing;
    • Vessel stability systems (anti-heeling);
    • Bilge and ballast systems;
    • Tank gauging systems (pneumatic and electronic);
    • Fuel and lube oil transfer systems;
    • LNG (as a primary fuel source);
    • Vessel navigation systems;
    • Fire alarm and suppression systems.
