Position Overview
Reporting to the Director, Hardware Engineering, with dotted line to the Director, Product Innovation, the Manager, Hardware Development will be responsible for hiring, building, and leading the hardware team (both electrical and mechanical disciplines). In addition to team leadership, the Manager, Hardware Development will provide deep technical expertise in defining, architecting, implementing, verifying, putting into production and deploying to the field highly reliable and high-performance research-based ultrasound platforms. The manager will oversee the design and development of electronics and circuits, mechanical and cabling assemblies and ultrasound system industrial design. This will involve creation of models and prototypes, product testing, and ultimately developing and documenting hardware schematics for ultrasound system products.

Job Description
Essential Job Functions:
- Hire, lead and guide the hardware team through architecture, trade studies, technology selection, circuit design and analysis, design reviews, schematic capture, component selection, circuit board stack-up design and layout, prototyping, bring-up, debugging, characterization and productization.
- Lead the hardware team to deliver on highly complex electrical/mechanical projects for the development of cutting-edge research-based ultrasound equipment.
- Lead the review of products, engineering, and management plans and reports as required.
- Ensure designs are reliable, easy to manufacture and of the lowest cost.
- Oversee the design transfer process as products move from concept and specification and prototyping to system integration, validation, handover to Manufacturing.
- Oversee the End-of-Life process as products near the end of their effective life. Work with the EOL team to ensure a smooth transition from production to end of customer support for products.
- Continuously look for areas of improvement of the team or processes, for the reduction in manufacturing costs, or for improvements in product quality.
- Work closely with the Program Management Office on project schedules to note any variances from the target completion date of the tasks, or that the tasks cannot be completed.
- Work in a safe manner so as not to endanger individual health and safety, or the health and safety of others.
- Work to achieve assigned tasks within the standards required (quality, quantity, time and resources).
- Provide leadership by example through adherence to VisualSonics' core values.
- Ensure that all systems meet appropriate levels of regulatory compliance.
- Take all reasonable precautions to protect VisualSonics' corporate assets, including proprietary and confidential information.
- Comply with all legal requirements, all corporate policies and procedures, and with generally accepted business and ethical practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned by immediate manager.
Knowledge/Experience:
- Minimum Bachelors Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Systems and/or Biomedical Engineering or a combination of equivalent experience.
- Registration as a professional engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) is desired.
- Minimum of 7 years of system design experience.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in PCB layout, component selection, design for manufacturing and high reliability, optimization for schedule, cost, power, and performance.
- Prior management experience.
- Experience working with ISO 9001 and/or 13485 quality standards.
- Experience with managing short and long-term projects.
- Experience with systems involving electronics, software and mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with medical equipment and medical imaging.
- Sound understanding of the essentials in an ultrasound machine.
- Knowledge and experience in imaging applications, market, end-users, and OEMs is an asset.
Skills/Abilities:
- Must be able to relate interpersonally with all levels of the organization, including the Executives.
- Demonstrated knowledge of electronics, supply chain, evaluation of components, component assembly, board fabrication, design and materials.
- Proficiency in using test instrumentation.
- Proficiency in understanding electronics schematics and PCB layouts, mechanical drawings, and other technical drawings.
- Must possess strong problem solving skills.
- Excellent priority setting and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Proficiency in MS Office for communication and documentation purposes.
- Ability to prepare high quality and reliable deliverables while working quickly, calmly, and effectively under pressure from time constraints and deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively to lead a team, as well as independently when necessary.
- Ability to respond to urgent situations appropriately by prioritization.
- Ability to follow-up on issues without guidance.
