Job Description

The Developer, Business Intelligence (BI) will play a key role in Uncommon's innovation efforts to ensure that Uncommon's Home Office, Regions, and Schools have the technology solutions required to accomplish the organization's strategic goals. The Developer, BI will develop an understanding of needs across all levels of the organization and implement new technology and data solutions to Uncommon's most pressing problems. The individual will work closely with other team members, outsourced senior application developers, and owners of the data sources. The Developer, BI, will be responsible for providing access to the data via reports, data extracts, and analysis tools and for coding stored procedures. The individual will need to build an understanding the K-12 data landscape (e.g. assessments, SIS, standards), and to have the ability to gather reporting requirements, design reports, and release them into production.

Product Management and Development:
  • Examine and interpret complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights.
  • Synthesize and translate instructional and business data needs into creative visualizations and tools
  • Develop, maintain and manage creative advanced reporting, analytics, dashboards and other BI solutions primarily in, but not limited to, Tableau, which includes other reporting tools like Superset, etc
  • Create detailed, interactive reports, intuitive visualizations, and dashboards that provide actionable insights and support decision-making.
  • Develop a perspective on the best way to present statistical information to stakeholders; advocate for that perspective with stakeholders.
  • Perform and document data analysis, data validation, data mapping/design, by accessing multiple sources, specifically data residing in source systems
  • Provide application analysis and data modeling design to collect data for centralized data warehouse
  • Extract data from databases and data warehouses for reporting and to facilitate sharing between multiple data systems

Data Governance:
  • Implement processes and standards for data quality, including validation, consistency checks, and error handling.
  • Standardize data collection by developing methods for database design and validation reports
  • Work with data stewards to ensure data integrity and address data quality issues.
  • Maintain a data catalog to document data sources, definitions, and metadata.
  • Facilitate data discovery and promote transparency in data usage across the organization.
  • Collaborate with governance teams to align BI practices with overall data governance frameworks.
  • Assess and determine governance, stewardship, and frameworks for managing business intelligence across the organization.

Subject Matter Expert and Stakeholder Representative:
  • The developer is responsible for collaborating with diverse stakeholders to develop new, complex visualizations, often displaying data at multiple levels of granularity meant for different audiences.
  • The developer also needs to be able to help stakeholders understand technical challenges in our database well enough to help them prioritize investing in holistic solutions and paying down technical debt.
  • Partner with instructional, operational, regional, and HO teams to develop reports and address data needs to provide reporting solutions
  • Facilitate collaboration and communication with internal stakeholders to understand data needs, clarify requirements, and navigate and resolve competing priorities
  • Understand and represent stakeholders' goals and use cases to determine the future state of organizational integrations
  • Understand and champion the appropriate long-term vision for BI at Uncommon
  • Ensure user adoption of new processes by creating training materials and providing mentorship, guidance, support and performance feedback to end users of our visualizations and data sets
  • Independently create detailed communication and change management plans for workstreams including simple, creative ways to explain complex information for clear decision-making
  • Act as point of escalation for issues with visualizations
  • Train IT Support team to handle common issues
  • Collaborate with project managers and business unit leaders for all projects involving integrations


Qualifications

Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree required(Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, or equivalent subject preferred)

Experience Requirements:
  • 5-6 years of professional experience
    • 3+ years of IT or Data experience
    • 3+ years of experience in the Business Intelligence field and expertise in data-driven dashboard/analytics design, development and implementation
    • Coding in R, Python, and SQL
    • Experience with Tableau, Superset, or similar visualization software
    • Experience with DBT or similar data modeling platform
    • Previous experience in K-12 public education preferred

Travel& Schedule:
  • 3 days in person in our central office located downtown Manhattan
  • Local travel is expected to school sites and other offices in NY, NJ, and MA.

Compensation

Compensation for this role is between $95,200 to $112,000.

Starting pay is determined using various factors including but not limited to relevant professional experience, education, certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. If you meet all job description requirements you will likely receive an offer of $100,800.
