Scope:

Responsible for machine controls of packaging and distribution systems across Global Packaging Operations. Including but not limited to, integration of new technology, system interfaces, troubleshooting, corrective and preventative actions, and validation of new automation equipment. Responsible for the implementation of standard engineering practices, as well as providing detailed documentation throughout project lifecycles and upon project closure. Partners with internal and external resources to ensure proper development and testing of equipment that aligns with CVI expectations for compliance, machine performance and readiness. Helps to identify and assess risks to processes and in projects, as it relates to controls and automation, and partners to help mitigate or resolve. Responsible for or supports identifying and implementing process improvements (through cost reduction, improved reliability, standardization etc.).

Job Summary:

The Controls and Automation Engineer is responsible for supporting the Technical Innovations group for Packaging and Distribution. They will assist on projects including equipment builds, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, improvements and driving/implementing best practices and standardization that align with the strategic vision for the team.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions & Accountabilities:
  • Supports the design and development of all aspects of automation control systems, equipment, and machinery.
  • Supports installation and maintenance of Programmable Logic Controls (PLCs), print, inspect and material handling based hardware and software.
  • Troubleshoot and problem-solve a wide variety of controls issues.
  • Participates in machine and automated equipment builds, improvements and cost reduction projects.
  • Review technical documentation and software control systems for machine control & inspection systems.
  • Support global improvement and development initiatives relevant to the controls group functions.
  • Support new equipment, new process development activities and train employees on these activities.
  • Investigate and analyze equipment failure or issues to find the root cause, makes recommendations and execute improvements associated with corrective or preventative actions.
  • Maintain documentation and records to meet all QMS requirements.
  • Partner with Controls/Operations/Vendor Engineers from other sites to maintain global standardization and consistency.
  • Support the generation of equipment risk assessments, equipment testing, and generation/execution of Validation Protocols
  • Provide detailed documentation upon project completion.
  • Assist with controls systems design, specification, programming, simulation and testing.
  • Other duties may be assigned.


Travel Requirements:
  • Up to 10-20%. Domestic and worldwide travel, including CV sites, external vendors.


Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong communication skills required for interaction with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to read and interpret Standard Operating Procedures (SOP'S) and quality system requirements. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leadership, customers, and health authority/regulatory officials.
  • Highly computer literate with regular use of Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to read and understand highly technical material.
  • Organized approach to troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • Exposure to multiple automation system platforms including DCS, PLC, HMI, SCADA and other applicable systems.
  • Experience in PLC and HMI/Scada programming. Applications should include Rockwell Logix 5000, Siemens Step 7, FactoryTalk SE/ME, Monitouch V-sft, FactoryTalk Transaction Manager and Kepware.
  • Understanding of thermal transfer printing, laser printers and vision systems. Desired applications include Domino Dynamark/QuickStep2, VideoJet Clarisoft/Smartgraph, CABlabel S3 and Cognex In-Sight Vision Suite.
  • Knowledge with motion control, robotics, and bar code readers. Desired applications include Microscan ESP, Keyence AutoID, Cognex Dataman, Staubli robots and Rockwell/Lenze drives.
  • Implement and ensure global compliance with 3rd party hardware and communication interfaces across TCP/IP, EthernetIP, Profinet, Devicenet, etc.
  • Proficient at reading electrical schematics in PDF.
  • Solid works or AutoCAD as well as Microsoft Office, Visual Studio, and Visual Basic.
  • Experience of working with cross-site, multinational, cross functional teams.
  • Innovative, self-reliant, dependable, and calm under pressure.
  • Diplomatic, with good inter-personal relationships.
  • Ability to multi-task in a calm manner; clear thinker and communicator with good presentation skills.


Work Environment:
  • Office environment, visit warehouse floor environment for extended periods of time.
  • Will often work near moving mechanical parts.


Experience:
  • 1-5 years' experience in engineering, process control and/or automation.
  • Experience in medical device manufacturing environments is a plus.


Education:
  • B.S. in relevant Engineering field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Lean Six Sigma Certification a plus.

For U.S. locations that require disclosure of compensation, the starting base pay for this role is between $74,240.00 and $98,987.00 per year and may include cost of living adjustments. The actual base pay includes many factors and is subject to change and modification in the future. This position may also be eligible for other types of compensation and benefits.
