In this role, you'll manage a diverse book of clients - many with complex business structures - and provide both compliance and planning support. You'll lead engagements, collaborate with teammates, and contribute to the firm's evolution as we continue to grow through acquisitions and long-standing relationships. The Position:
We're looking for a Tax Manager to join our growing team. In this role, you'll manage a diverse book of clients - many with complex business structures - and provide both compliance and planning support. You'll lead engagements, collaborate with teammates, and contribute to the firm's evolution as we continue to grow through acquisitions and long-standing relationships. This role is ideal for someone with public accounting experience who thrives in a fast-paced, client-focused environment and values autonomy, responsibility, and clear communication.
Responsibilities:
- Manage the preparation and review of complex individual and business tax returns, including S Corps, C Corps, partnerships, and multi-entity structures
- Lead tax planning strategies for clients with varied and often interrelated business interests
- Provide clear and timely communication with clients, helping them understand tax positions and options
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and contribute to Reason's evolving workflows and systems
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations across multiple jurisdictions
- Participate in firm initiatives, including the implementation of new technology (e.g., AI tools) and internal training
- Own your workload with a high level of accountability, time management, and precision - particularly during tax and planning seasons
- Maintain billable target (80%) while balancing leadership and collaborative responsibilities
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to the professional development of the tax team
Qualifications:
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in public accounting
- CPA preferred (or EA with significant experience)
- Strong experience with complex business entities (S-Corps, C-Corps, partnerships, LLCs, etc.)
- Proven ability to manage tax workflows and multiple client engagements and deadlines across a variety of industries
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, tax compliance, tax law and planning across diverse entity types
- Tech-savvy and open to new tools - experience with digital tax platforms
- Excellent communication skills and comfort with direct client interaction
- Proven track record as a problem-solver with the confidence to ask questions and take initiative
- Local to central San Diego or within a 25-minute commute is ideal
- Willing to work in-office full time during onboarding and busy seasons (Feb-April, Oct-Dec); hybrid eligible after initial training period
Salary & Benefits:
- $120,000 - $150,000 base, DOE
- Annual bonus based on firm performance and individual contribution
- Unlimited PTO + Paid holidays
