Position Overview
We're seeking a mission-driven finance leader to serve as Director of Accounting for a large charitable nonprofit. This role oversees budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting functions, while also providing financial leadership for the organization's largest agency, Family and Community Services.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead accounting operations, budgeting, and reporting in coordination with the CFO.
- Supervise direct reports including: Accounting Manager, Contract/Voucher Manager, Client Financial Analyst, and Adult Guardianship Program Financial Lead.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory standards.
- Oversee audits, regulatory filings, and internal controls.
- Drive process improvements, financial analysis, and forecasting.
- Collaborate with senior leaders and external funders on budgeting and reporting.
- Support strategic initiatives with data-driven insights.
- Education: Bachelor's in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master's or CPA preferred.
- Experience:
- 10+ years in nonprofit finance and accounting
- 5+ years in a senior leadership or director-level role
- Competencies:
- Deep knowledge of nonprofit funding (Federal & NY State)
- Expertise in financial operations, analysis, and internal controls
- Strong interpersonal, leadership, and team management skills
- Ability to build effective partnerships across departments and agencies
- Make a meaningful impact in a values-driven organization
- Collaborate with a seasoned leadership team and directly influence strategic decisions
