Description:

About the role

Muon space is building FireSat, a mission to revolutionize global wildfire detection and monitoring. Muon's IR Data Products team is building the analytics system that processes the data from our spacecraft's custom multispectral imaging instruments into data products and analytics for end-user stakeholders from this mission. We are seeking a Data Scientist to join this team. This is a multi-faceted role that will focus initially in two areas: leading the development of end-user analytics for wildfire stakeholders including exploratory research and development of new algorithms and analytic products; and diving deep into messy real-world data from this brand new system. Additional responsibilities will include writing production-ready code, geospatial data engineering, as well as interacting with end-user stakeholders to guide product development. This role will interact with both instrument engineering and science teams to ensure a deep understanding of the measurements being made as well as the needs of the data users. This role will ensure Muon's data products are of the highest scientific quality, are built to meet end-user needs, and achieve Muon's goals in monitoring and addressing the wildfire megacrisis.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of end-user analytics from Muon's FireSat mission. This may include wildfire products such as wildfire perimeter extraction and fire radiative power.
  • Build state-of-the-art Earth observation data products by diving deep into messy real-world data from this new system.
  • Research and development to improve existing data and analytics and discover powerful new approaches. This will include incorporating AI/ML and other advanced analytics techniques into data products.
  • This role will be product owner for one or more customer-facing analytics, requiring the maintenance and continuous improvement of those analytics.
  • Write production-ready code that integrates into customer-facing products and services.
  • Ensure the product quality, quantitative validation, and scientific integrity of Muon's data products and services are of the highest quality.
  • Cross-functional work with software engineers and scientists to design, build, and maintain operational services from Muon's core remote sensing missions.
  • Learn new topics as needed (measurements techniques, wildfire detection, cloud identification, etc.)
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience building geospatial data products from remote sensing data
  • Experience working with real-world data from new instruments
  • Familiarity with common geospatial data formats (such as Cloud optimized GeoTIFF)
  • Exceptional skills in python-based development and analysis
  • Experience with AI/ML techniques
  • Ability to work with a distributed, interdisciplinary team (scientists, engineers, data support)
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced start up environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Domain expertise in wildfire analytics including fire detection, mapping, and characterization
  • Experience working with infrared data
  • Delivered operational analytics to customers
  • Familiarity with cloud-native systems (AWS, preferably)
  • Experience working with large Tb-sized datasets
Salary

The salary range for this role is $131K - $195K and will depend on a candidate's skills, geographic location, qualifications, and experience as defined during the interview process.
