JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Public Safety is responsible for overseeing and managing safety and security operations within the health system. This role provides strategic leadership to ensure the protection of patients, staff, visitors, and hospital property, while also managing budgetary, personnel, training, and operational activities. The director collaborates with law enforcement and emergency responders to mitigate risks and leads a team of public safety personnel, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and accreditation standards. This position will report directly to the Administrative Director of Emergency Management and Public Safety.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership and Management:
Lead and manage the Public Safety Department, including hiring, training, and supervising staff.
Develop and implement safety and security policies and procedures.
Conduct regular safety and security audits to identify potential risks and implement corrective measures.
Prepare and manage the department's budget, including procurement of safety equipment and resources.
Participating member of the NCH Workplace Violence Committee and the Emergency Management Committee.
Member of the NCH Incident Management Team, during activations.
Oversee the Guest Services team, ensuring a high level of customer service and efficient guest registration processes.
Manage the hospital's lost and found operations.

Communication and Coordination:
Organize public safety awareness programs and provide education and training to the NCH Staff.
Prepare and present reports on safety and security matters to Division Leader.
Maintain effective communication with the Administrative Director of Emergency Management and Public Safety.

Operational Oversight:
Ensure that facilities are secured through recognized patrol procedures for the prevention of fire, theft, vandalism, and the protection of personnel.
Respond to incidents and ensure timely, thorough, and properly documented investigations.
Assist in the implementation and management of security systems and technologies.
Assist with the operational coordination of Special Events.
This position may require working outside of regular business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to respond to emergencies and incidents.
The role involves both office work and on-site inspections and patrols.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Public Safety, Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, or a related field required.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in public safety or security management, with at least 2 years in a leadership role required.
Previous experience in hospital security is required.
Familiarity with healthcare-specific regulations such as OSHA standards and HIPAA compliance.
Certification in First Aid, CPR, and other relevant safety certifications preferred.
Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) from IAHSS preferred.
Strong knowledge of safety and security regulations and best practices.
Excellent leadership, customer service, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to make difficult decisions in high-pressure situations.
Strong organizational skills and follow-through.
