Job Duties

VDOT's Staunton District Traffic Operations division is seeking a highly qualified Engineering Supervisor Signals to lead District signal operations in managing traffic signals using traffic management system, traffic monitoring tools, and traffic engineering applications for recurring and non-recurring events. Specifically, you will analyze traffic patterns and adjust traffic signal timings to mitigate traffic congestion and address changing traffic patterns due to special events, construction and maintenance activities, incidents and emergency situations, address concerns regarding traffic signal operations as well as develop strategies to improve transportation network performance, enhance mobility and safety and minimize congestion.

Minimum Qualifications
Ability to effectively communicate technical information orally and in writing and to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Knowledge of traffic signal design and operations to include federal and state regulations, design standards, and specifications.
Skill in critical thinking, decision making and problem solving during emergency and real time sensitive situations.
Knowledge of project and program management.
Supervisory experience to include the ability to plan and prioritize multiple and competing priorities.
Knowledge of traffic flow theory applicable to traffic engineering and signalization.
Ability to apply engineering principles and practices to a variety of complex projects.
Ability to solve problems and make decisions regarding traffic signal operational improvements.
Knowledge of traffic control devices, traffic signal and freeway operations, transportation network operational analysis, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and system engineering.

Additional Considerations
Supervisory experience in a transportation planning environment.
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer's (PE) license.
A combination of training, experience, or education in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Systems Engineering or related field desired.

This position is classified as "designated" to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
