Pay Range: $81,279.24-$111,136.80 Annual
Traffic Engineer I- Hiring Range: $81,279 to $95,603
Traffic Engineer II- Hiring Range: $89,814 to $105,642
Position Purpose
Responsible for the design and contract administration of routine traffic and transportation projects related to the city's infrastructure including street design, signal design and signing and striping of roadways. Responsible for the traffic and transportation engineering review and monitoring of privately constructed development improvements to be added within the public right-of-way and easements. Assists in overseeing the operational and maintenance aspects of traffic engineering to ensure safe and efficient movement of vehicle and pedestrian traffic throughout the City of Arvada in the most economical manner available.

Colorado Engineer In Training (EIT) certification required or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment. A valid Colorado driver's license and acceptable driving record is required.

Two (2) years of experience in traffic or transportation engineering.

Essential Job Functions
- Prepares routine requests for proposals, traffic and transportation studies, right-of-way acquisitions and design of traffic and transportation infrastructure projects.
- Prepares routine public traffic and transportation infrastructure project bids and construction contracts.
- Administers routine public traffic and transportation infrastructure contracts, which may include preparation of progress payments, negotiation of change orders, resolving contract payment disputes, and ensuring compliance with provisions in the contract.
- Receives and responds to requests from the public regarding signing, speeding, street lighting and other traffic issues.
- Reviews engineering plans submitted by others, recommend changes for reasonableness, to conform with existing infrastructure, or in conformance to the city's Engineering Code of Standards and Specifications for the Design and Construction of Public Improvements related to traffic and transportation.
- Enforces the city's Engineering Code of Standards and Specifications for the Design and Construction of Public Improvements related to traffic and transportation.
- Reviews and coordinates programs and projects with governmental agencies, districts, landowners, contractors, and consultants.
- May assist in negotiation of acquisition of right of way from property owners.
- Communicates and interacts with a variety of interests including but not limited to elected officials, government and quasi-government representatives, districts, landholders, developers, citizens and others as needed to perform the duties and functions of the traffic engineer I position.
- Assists with development of specific routine project budget, oversees expenditures of the project funds.
- Analyzes alternative solutions to projects to determine the most adequate and cost-effective solution.
- Prepares traffic signs and marking work orders, parking permits and assists in reviewing temporary traffic control permits.
- May assist with design, timing, and maintenance of traffic signals.
- Provides technical resources to other city departments to ensure that applicable traffic standards (City Code, MUTCD, CDOT) are met.
- Travels to and attends team and organizational meetings, training, events and activities and appropriately and professionally represents the department.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of principles and practices of traffic and transportation engineering, including standards, policies, and technical issues.
- Basic knowledge of public works practices and procedures, planning, and administration.
- Basic knowledge in preparing and negotiating routine contractor and vendor contracts.
- Knowledge and ability in the application of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
- Ability to prioritize multiple and changing work requests while meeting the many needs of the customers/users.
- Ability to exercise sound initiative and judgment as well as make decisions within the scope of assigned authority.
- Ability to effectively communicate information, both verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner.
- Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
