Job Description
San Bernardino Valley College is a designated Hispanic Serving Institution with a majority of our students identifying themselves as either African American/Black or Latinx. At the heart of the Inland Empire, SBVC is a driving factor to improve the lives of our students, their families, and our communities. We are seeking an individual to join our Counseling Department that is fully committed to transformational, culturally responsive education.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The Counselor shall perform all regularly assigned duties that include academic, career, and personal counseling including follow-up services. Specific responsibilities include evaluating student transcripts, and assisting students with career decisions, in person and on-line education planning which includes creating comprehensive student education plans, transfer guidance and course selection. Evening and some weekend work will be required as part of this position. Counselors work in an environment that requires the highest level of integrity, confidentiality, ethical practices, innovation, collegiality, teamwork, and adaptability to San Bernardino Valley College's campus culture in support of student success.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

1. College teaching experience in career and student development courses

2. Perform liaison activities to service area high schools, and the community.

3. Serve as a liaison to instructional divisions.

4. Assist with the development of counseling related publications.

5. Present workshops and conducting follow-up for special student populations including probation and dismissal students.

6. Appropriately assist in the development and implementation of special programs focusing on access and retention.

7. Participate in curriculum development for student development courses.

8. Conduct student orientations and student success workshops.

9. Participate in departmental meetings and activities including campus-wide activities.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family, and child counseling

OR the equivalent* (NOTE: a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to title 5 section 53410.1)

Experience that indicates a sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and personnel.

*If you believe to have the experience equivalent to the minimum qualifications for an academic position, you may request a determination of equivalency by completing a District Request for Equivalency form and provide supporting documentation as appropriate.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of full-time experience, or four years of part-time paid community college counseling experience with an emphasis on education planning.
One year of college teaching experience in career and student development courses
One year experience in career assessment tool and use in career counseling computer programs such as EUREKA, Discover, SIGI, Career Caf, or similar programs.
One year of experience in the transfer process particularly in the use of UC Transfer process, Cal State Apply, and ASSIST.
One year of experience with or knowledge of articulation agreements and curriculum development.
One year of experience with intervention programs or strategies for student success.
One year of experience in working with students who are undecided/undeclared about majors and careers.
One year of experience in conducting student orientations, workshops, and follow up services for special student populations.
You have medical, dental and vision plans from which to choose coverage. You may cover yourself, spouse or domestic partner and eligible children. Coverage is effective on the first of the calendar month following your date of hire.

CASH IN LIEU BENEFIT
The district offers a taxable $250 monthly stipend to a benefits eligible employee who waives medical coverage under SBCCD's group plan because that employee has other group coverage (e.g., a spouse's plan, parents' plan, or other employer's plan).

LIFE INSURANCE
Term Life and Accidental, Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance - The district provides a $50,000 basic term life insurance policy and $50,000 of basic accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) policy. The district pays the full cost of this coverage. Coverage is automatic and effective on the first of the month after your date of hire. Employees are also provided opportunity to enroll in optional term life and AD&D policies for themselves as well as spouse/domestic partner and children.

VOLUNTARY BENEFIT PLANS
The district partners with American Fidelity to administer the district's voluntary benefit plans which include:

  • Accident insurance
  • Flexible spending accounts

PRE-TAX RETIREMENT SAVINGS PLAN - As a district employee, you have two voluntary retirement savings plans available to you, which allow you to invest pre-tax dollars to supplement your CalPERS Retirement Plan benefit. They are a 403(b) plan or 457(b) plan.
You may participate in one or both of the plans. Each is governed by a different section of the IRS Code resulting in different rules and provisions. SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union is the districts third party administrators for all retirement savings plans.

RETIREMENT PLANS
CalPERS Retirement Plan - The California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) is a defined benefit retirement plan that provides lifetime benefits based on members' years of service, age, and final compensation. Full-time employees in non-academic positions appointed for at least six months, or part-time employees working at least 50% and appointed for at least one year, are automatically enrolled in the CalPERS retirement plan. Depending on hire and/or membership date, employees are placed in one of two membership categories: Classic or PEPRA. For more information on CalPERS:

Depending on hire and/or membership date, employees are placed in one of two membership categories.
