Job Description
The Department of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health (SOPH) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), is inviting applications from outstanding candidates for multiple full-time tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor (12-month appointments with rank and tenure status commensurate with qualifications). Faculty will be expected and given the opportunity to develop their own independent line of research. In addition, substantial opportunities to collaborate and publish with other established investigators will be offered. This is an excellent opportunity to expand one's career into one of the most rapidly progressing and in-demand areas of scientific research.
The Department of Biostatistics has 20 faculty members and over 40 administrative and research staff contributing to a diverse portfolio of interdisciplinary projects and academic programs, and is home of the DATA coordinating and Collaborative Research Unit (DATA CRU, https://www.uab.edu/datacru) specializing in the design, data management, and statistical analysis of clinical trials and cohort studies. The Department offers four graduate degrees including the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Science (MS), both founded in theory and application. The Doctor of Public Health with concentration in Biostatistics, one of only five programs in the US, and Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) with concentration in Biostatistics provide a balance between the application of biostatistics and public health theory and leadership. The department also provides courses supporting SOPH undergraduate and graduate degree programs, interdisciplinary graduate degree programs, and the graduate Certificate in Applied Biostatistics and Epidemiology.
Founded in 1978, the UAB SOPH has grown to 84 full-time faculty and 806 students (in the 2023-24 academic year). The UAB SOPH is the only CEPH-accredited public health program in Alabama and both the school (18th) and department (13th) are ranked in the top 20 nationally by U.S. News & World Report. The SOPH is second only to the School of Medicine at UAB for extramural research funding among all 12 schools at UAB. In 2023, the UAB SOPH had more than $42 million in grants and contracts and ranked 29th among all Schools of Public Health and 19th for all Public Schools of Public Health for NIH funding. UAB is a very high research activity (R1) university and academic health center that discovers, teaches, and applies knowledge for the intellectual, cultural, social, and economic benefit of Birmingham, the state, and beyond. Spanning more than 100 city blocks, UAB is the state of Alabama's largest single employer with some 25,000 employees and has an annual, state-wide economic impact exceeding $12.1 billion. Forbes named UAB America's Best Large Employer for 2021 and best in-state employer in 2023.
Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.
Required Qualifications
