What you will be doing:
This position is assigned to the Bridge Section's Hydraulics Squad. This group plays an essential role in the delivery of bridge projects. Hydraulics Squad staff ensure that bridges are adequately designed for and protected against major floods, scour risks, debris, river ice, lateral channel migration, and more. This job involves discharge estimation (hydrology), hydraulic modeling, scour countermeasure design, and shore protection provisions for bridges in coastal environments. The incumbent will work regularly with structural and geotechnical engineering staff to ensure bridge substructures meet the hydraulic design objectives. This position will also assist with routine bridge inspections around the state.
We are looking for an applicant with considerable knowledge and experience in completing hydraulic engineering assignments. Ideally, the candidate can meet these needs through:
* Hydraulic design experience in riverine and coastal settings, including cold climate considerations.
* Experience inspecting hydraulic structures for scour and erosion.
* Experience in the preparation of engineering plans, specifications, and estimates for construction.
* Proficiency with hydraulic modeling software.
* Experience writing technical reports.
Our organization, mission and culture:
The DOT&PF Bridge Section is a production-oriented office that is comprised of talented, high-performing engineers. The hydraulics engineers must be familiar with Alaska's diverse landscape and understand its complex flood hazards. Risk factors include winter ice accumulations in rivers, ice jam potential, high rates of geomorphic change, and varying hydrologic regimes. Hydraulic engineers help DOT&PF carry out its mission by ensuring hydraulic structures meet engineering standards and organizational performance goals.)The DOT&PF core values are integrity, excellence, and respect. We support an environment focused on teamwork and collaboration to achieve results. We succeed in achieving our transportation mission through building credibility with our customers, stakeholders, and the public.
Benefits of joining our team:
Alaska DOT&PF offers great opportunities for professional growth, given the state's wild rivers and dynamic landscape. The position will have access to state-of-the-art equipment and analytical tools - such as unmanned aerial systems and 2-dimenstional modeling software - and will, over time, develop a calibrated eye for Alaska's river-related risk potentials. Bridge Section staff tend to be more familiar than most with Alaska's remote areas because we venture far and wide for bridge inspections. We have the privilege of traveling to areas in the state that few others get to visit.)Please see here for more information about the State of Alaska's benefits package and retirement plan:)
The working environment you can expect:
The duty station for this position is located in the Headquarters Building in Juneau, Alaska. The majority of work time is spent in a professional office. This job will involve field work assignments for bridge inspections and water-related studies, usually amounting to several weeks per year.
