Job Summary:

As the Category Manager of our Floral Departments, this position is responsible for product procurement and pricing, merchandising, category management, and profitability of the departments. This position, in partnership with Store Directors and Assistant Store Directors, participates in the leadership of Floral Department team members, including teaching, training, and feedback.

Specific Job Duties:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • In partnership with the Senior Director, Fresh, makes/authorizes all item selections within the Floral Departments.
  • Selects vendors and builds relationships; researches and identifies new vendors as needed; establishes effective working relations with regional growers. Negotiates vendor procurement terms.
  • Effectively performs category leadership functions; determines sets, item selection, and pricing to achieve maximum profitability and sales goals.
  • Develops and maintains quality control guidelines; establishes shelf-life, rotation, freshness, and presentation standards.
  • Works with the Senior Director, Fresh, on international proprietary, signature, and private label product development and procurement.
  • Researches and determines Floral Department supply selections (i.e., packaging, bags, gloves, cello, raffia, etc.), while working within budgetary guidelines.
  • Prepares Floral Departments for major holidays, including product procurement, and communication with Floral store leadership team regarding merchandising, decoration, and additional space requirements, staffing needs, and appropriate supply levels.
  • Adheres to company guidelines regarding prevention of internal and external loss, including risk management, accident prevention/safety awareness, and loss prevention.
  • Oversees product training and dissemination of product information; schedules classes for team members with manufacturers and vendors; oversees Floral Certification Program; provides on-the-job training as needed.
  • Provides leadership for Floral Department team members, including product training, motivation, communication, and sharing of the Company vision. Works with Store Director (SD) and Assistant Store Director (ASD), as needed, to help address employee performance issues (i.e. provides SD/ASD with relevant information so he/she may follow up with team member).
  • Works with the Marketing Department to develop promotional, marketing, and strategic plans.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Director, Fresh, or Executive Vice President of Retail Operations.

Qualifications/Skills Required:

  • Minimum three years floral department management experience required.
  • Minimum five years supervisory experience preferred.
  • Possesses strong knowledge of gross profit, inventory control, and labor percentages; proven experience working with each.
  • Possesses comprehensive, relative product information with a proven history of using knowledge to train employees and best service customers.
  • Demonstrates a strong knowledge and understanding of floral; possesses successful experience with weddings, funerals, large parties, and other special events.
  • Demonstrates an interest in learning; possesses a strong interest in floral and related products.
  • Proven ability to positively affect sales, and manage profit and loss.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively negotiate with vendors and suppliers.
  • Possesses creative merchandising and display skills.
  • Strong leadership skills, proven success as a team leader and member.
  • Ability to effectively delegate and follow-through.
  • Superior communication skills, oral and written.
  • Proven history of personnel development.
  • Demonstrates a high-level of self-motivation; takes initiative; problem solves.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously and produce quality output while working within deadlines a must. Sense of urgency required. Excellent time management and organizational skills.

The specific programs and options available to any given team member are dependent upon eligibility factors such as position, date of hire, work location, and terms of applicable collective bargaining agreements.

Employment may be dependent upon successful background check and reference checks. All store employees must have a valid Washington State Food Workers Card to begin work.
