Job Description
The UAB Heersink School of Medicine (HSOM) is seeking applications for Chair, Department of Medicine (DOM). The Chair reports to and works closely with the Senior Vice President for Medicine and Dean of the Heersink School of Medicine, the CEO of the UAB Health System, and the Senior Vice Dean for the HSOM to guide the growth and development of the department's highly respected clinical, education, and research enterprises, while leveraging UAB's extraordinary faculty and resources.
The successful candidate will possess outstanding leadership and communication skills and exhibit a style that encourages collaboration and innovation. They will have well-formed delegation skills and ease in handling all Department activities and mission areas. A commitment to research and education is crucial as well as an innate orientation to consultation and reaching mutually beneficial outcomes. Reporting to Anupam Agarwal, MD, Senior Vice President for Medicine and Dean, University of Alabama at Birmingham Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, and working closely with other Department Chairs, Center and Institute Directors, UAB Medicine leaders, and Corporate and Community Partners, this individual will enhance and deepen innovation in clinical, translational, and population health with the goal of improving the fundamental understanding of disease and positively impacting patient outcomes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Chair of the Department of Medicine will support the UAB Heersink School of Medicine's and UAB Medicine's visions through the creation of novel strategies to grow the department and continue to enhance the department's tripartite educational, clinical, and research missions. S/he will assess gaps within those mission areas and identify future opportunities and needs and will serve as a member of senior leadership to establish research and education priorities. The Chair will provide strategic leadership for all aspects of the department, including the positive representation of the department within the UAB enterprise, creating collaboration opportunities and bridges across the institution.
Additionally, the Chair serves on several important committees within the Heersink School of Medicine, UAHSF and UAB Health System including the HSOM Executive committee, UAB Medicine Executive committee, HSF Board, JOLC, Comprehensive Transplant Institute, Cardiovascular Institute and others.
Additional responsibilities, duties, and critical tasks of the Chair include, but are not limited to, the following:
Provide strategic and operational oversight and expertise for all aspects of the Department, including the positive representation of the Department;
Map and execute the next phases of the Department's growth. The Department is highly interconnected across UAB Medicine, and the vision should leverage its strengths, Heersink School of Medicine, and the UAB Health System specially aligning with the system clinical expansion strategy;
Define and lead the Department's research strategy, emphasizing deliberate investment into research activities and priorities. Support investigators within the Department in efforts to secure NIH, clinical trials, and other grant funding to support research priorities;
Shape eminent clinical programs and champion technologies to enhance the care team. Partner with the UAB Health System leadership in building areas of clinical excellence, competing with external entities, and further integrating related operations across the health system;
Bolster education and advanced training by ensuring adequate faculty support; innovate pre-clinical education;
Supervise the preparation, implementation, and monitoring of the Department-related budgets, encompassing all funding sources and ensuring compliance with grant, legislative, and institutional guidelines;
Promote the recruitment, management, professional development, and retention of faculty and staff with wide-ranging perspectives and life experiences. Build an atmosphere of collegiality, openness, development, and engagement that is supportive of all UAB community members;
Ensure ethical medical and financial practices across the Department, supporting compliance activities;
Align with the Heersink School of Medicine's four research strategic focus areas in Health Equity, Brain Health, I-4ward (Infection, Inflammation, Immunity, and Immuno-Therapy), and D-TECH (Disruptive Technology Empowering Precision Health);
Foster leadership development in the Department;
Expand and strengthen collaborative opportunities and bridges across the institution as well as with community professionals;
Work with other chairs and serve as an institutional leader; and
Provide open communication within the Department so that transparency can yield improved opportunities for Departmental success.

Academic Eminence and Leadership
Outstanding personal academic accomplishments in Medicine and the experience and national reputation necessary to build the prominence of the Department's research, clinical, and educational missions. Leadership experience as a Division Head/Chief, Vice Chair, or Chair of Medicine. Academic rank of tenured Associate or Full Professor.
Recruitment, Retention and Mentorship
A proven record developing academic leaders and mentoring junior faculty while identifying and recruiting students, trainees, staff, and faculty with wide-ranging perspectives and life experiences. Ability to recruit outstanding new faculty as well as retain strong faculty.
