KKCS is seeking a highly experienced Senior Design Manager to support the Asset Management Branch of the Los Angeles Unified School District's Facilities Services Division. This leadership position is responsible for developing, managing, and overseeing the standards, planning, and design coordination of K-12 educational facilities across the district. The position is full-time, contract, W2, and onsite in Los Angeles, CA.

POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
KKCS is seeking a highly experienced Senior Design Manager to support the Asset Management Branch of the Los Angeles Unified School District's Facilities Services Division. This leadership position is responsible for developing, managing, and overseeing the standards, planning, and design coordination of K-12 educational facilities across the district. The position is full-time, contract, W2, and onsite in Los Angeles, CA.
Duties:
- Develop, coordinate, and update LAUSD standards and guidelines, including Educational Specifications, the School Design Guide, and space program templates.
- Support leadership with prioritizing capital projects and programs through data-driven analysis, prioritization methodologies, and recommendations.
- Meet with instructional staff, school sites, and architects to define facility features that enhance instructional programs.
- Develop standards and guidelines ensuring new and modernized facilities meet educational requirements.
- Coordinate with the Furniture and Interiors Group to develop furniture and equipment solutions aligned with educational needs.
- Conduct post-occupancy assessments with instructional staff to determine necessary improvements or adjustments to District standards.
- Review and support development of project space programs that align with LAUSD's standard educational specifications and respond to site-specific needs.
- Review project design deliverables and provide comments on space planning and physical adjacencies.
- Coordinate with California Department of Education (CDE) requirements and support plan approval submittals.
- Plan, organize, and direct the design activities for School Upgrade Programs and critical repair projects.
- Function as the lead design professional in the Design Department, providing quality review, implementation of policy and procedures, and coordinating with the Division of State Architect (DSA).
- Manage and coordinate the design process to ensure projects align with programmatic, budgetary, environmental, and legal requirements.
- Lead architect selection processes based on qualifications and performance standards.
- Provide clear and consistent direction to architectural firms on goals, objectives, site parameters, schedule, and budget.
- Ensure comprehensive documentation throughout the project to meet legal requirements.
- Review proposed design changes to maintain project budget compliance.
- Recommend architectural firm assignments from pre-qualified firm lists.
- Develop continuing education opportunities (seminars and workshops) on architect and contractor collaboration.
- Coordinate project activities with other LAUSD branches, including Environmental Health and Safety, A/E Design Services, Maintenance and Operations, the School Occupancy Transitional Unit, Asbestos Technical Unit, and Local Districts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Required Experience:
- Fifteen (15) years of full-time paid professional experience in managing facilities design or capital project planning and coordination, including design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling.
- At least five (5) years of that experience must be in the design, planning, and construction of K-12 educational facilities.
Required Education:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Architecture, Urban Planning, or a related field.
- Master's degree in Architecture preferred.
- Continuing education and training specific to educational facilities planning is also preferred.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid Certificate of Registration as an Architect by the California State Architectural Board or Professional Engineer by the California State Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
- Accredited Learning Environments Planner (ALEP) designation required.
