Emissions Certification and Compliance Division is recruiting an Air Resources Engineer (ARE) for its Compression Ignition & Heavy-Duty (CIHD) Certification section within the New Vehicle and Engine Programs Branch. CIHD section is responsible for the annual certification of on-road heavy-duty engines and vehicles, and off-road diesel engines and ensuring manufacturers are meeting the emission control requirements for sale in California. The section is also responsible for post-certification production and auditing activities.
Certification by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) involves performing detailed engineering evaluations and comprehensive reviews on new and advanced control technologies submitted by engine and vehicle manufacturers. During the application process, the ARE reviews manufacturers durability test plans, emission test procedures, test engine selections, test data, strategy and operation of emission control systems, auxiliary emission control devices, production running changes and field fixes. As applicable, confirmatory testing of manufacturer's certification test engines are conducted by the section during the certification review. Executive Orders are issued to certify compliant designs and permit the production of the new engines and vehicles for sale into California. Additional responsibilities include assistance to CARB regulatory and enforcement activities, providing compliance assistance to manufacturers, and acting as a liaison to the public concerning CARB certification program.

Working Conditions
This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.
Beginning July 1st, 2025, per Executive Order N-22-25, CARB employees will be required to report into office four days a week.
The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position's designated headquarters location at their own expense, as indicated on their duty statement.
