Job Summary

The Tysons Corner office is seeking a Roadway Engineer to join our team. This position offers a hybrid or remote work opportunity for self-motivated individuals who thrive in a flexible environment. Whether you're an Entry-Level Engineer in Training (EIT) or a Senior Professional Engineer (PE), we offer a place to grow your career while contributing to impactful infrastructure projects.

The Roadway Engineer will play a key role in the design, and depending on experience level, the management of Design-Bid-Build and Alternative Delivery projects. You will use your expertise to ensure designs meet technical and safety standards, budgets, and project timelines. Familiarity with VDOT design practices is essential.

Responsibilities
*Tailored based on experience level.
  • Collect and analyze data for the preparation of road and highway designs.
  • Perform roadway/surface design using AASHTO, VDOT, and other applicable design specifications.
  • Produce or review roadway design drawings, calculations, and specifications.
  • Collaborate with designers and project managers on design development, isometric plans, permitting, and design review.
  • Contribute to proposal preparation and business development efforts.
  • Ensure design deliverables meet quality, safety, and constructability standards.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, contractors, vendors, and consultants to ensure design compliance.
  • Provide construction support and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Maintain organized project documentation and archives.

Senior-Level Candidates (PE) Responsibilities
  • Lead project execution to maintain scope, budget, and schedules.
  • Independently manage project tasks and client communication.
  • Provide internal quality control reviews.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support team development.
  • Engage in strategic planning and marketing initiatives.

Qualifications:
Required for all candidates:
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, OpenRoads, or ProjectWise.
  • Must pass a pre-employment screening; ICE is a drug-free workplace.

Entry-Level (EIT) Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 0-5 years of experience.
  • EIT certification (or ability to obtain) preferred.
  • Desire to learn VDOT design standards and gain practical experience.

Senior-Level (PE) Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field (Master's preferred).
  • PE license in Virginia required.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience with civil infrastructure projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of VDOT Design Practices and roadway geometric design.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position involves primarily office-based computer work (up to 8 hours per day) with occasional standing and walking. Employees may need to lift up to 20 pounds and should be able to visually and audibly perceive important design details. Clear communication, adaptability to change, and extended periods of seated work are part of this role.

Expected Hours of Work

Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a 1-hour unpaid lunch. Flexible/hybrid work schedules are available based on project needs.
