Executive Director

Position Summary:

The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive of MSSCA, responsible for overall leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED ensures the organization fulfills its mission, maintains financial sustainability, and complies with all regulatory and funding requirements. The ED leads a team of Directors overseeing key functional areas, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and excellence.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Board and the organization, ensuring alignment with MSSCA's mission and strategic goals.
  • Provide visionary leadership to guide growth, sustainability, and impact.
  • Oversee and support strategic planning efforts in collaboration with the Board and senior leadership.
  • Lead and manage a team of Directors, ensuring effective program delivery and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including Medicaid and grant requirements.
  • Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and fiscal management in collaboration with the Finance Director.
  • Ensure sound financial controls and sustainability strategies.
  • Oversee the execution and evaluation of programs to ensure effectiveness and alignment with community needs.
  • Monitor key performance indicators and drive continuous improvement.
  • Support program expansion and service innovation.
  • Represent MSSCA in the community, building relationships with funders, government agencies, and key stakeholders.
  • Advocate for policies and initiatives that support MSSCA's mission and the populations it serves.
  • Foster strategic partnerships to enhance services and funding opportunities.
  • Lead and mentor a high-performing team, fostering professional growth and leadership development.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and mission-driven workplace culture.
  • Ensure policies and practices support a high-quality work environment.
  • Ensure organizational policies and procedures meet legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee risk management, safety protocols, and crisis response planning.
  • Serve as a key advisor to the Board on industry trends and organizational needs.
  • Participate in high-level committees and initiatives as needed.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Board.


  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Education: Bachelor's degree required in one or more of the following; Non-profit Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, Special Education, Developmental Disabilities, Human Services, Psychology or related field. Master's degree preferred.
    • Experience and Skills: At least five years' experience in organization and/or program management that includes staff supervision, Medicaid regulations and compliance, grant writing, grants management and fiscal management.
    • Licensure, Certification, Registrations and Pre-hire Requirements: A current TB test, valid Alaska driver's license, and proof of automobile insurance must be submitted prior to employment. Successful candidates must submit to a criminal background check as required by state regulation and a credit check.
    • Successful completion of National Certificate of Achievement in Employment Services (NCES) within 1 year of employment.
    • Documentation of SDS Settings training or completion within 30 days of employment
    • Documentation of Critical Incident Reporting (CIR) training within the previous two years or within 30 days of employment.

    • Knowledge and experience with non-profit management and working with a Board of Directors.
    • Ability to be flexible, creative, organized and ability to prioritize workflow.
    • Active affiliation with appropriate non-profit networks and organizations to promote ongoing community involvement.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills, public speaking and group presentation skills.
    • Ability to objectively give guidance in resolving difficult, emotional and confidential matters.

    • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to serve on a management team and provide agency leadership and direction.
    • Demonstrate basic computer/word processing and typing skills.


    Work Environment:
    • Environment: Majority of the work will be performed in an office environment with florescent lighting and minimal opportunities for exposure to natural lighting throughout the workday. Moderate exposure to food/cooking odors. Dense staff population often requires sharing workspaces with minimal personal space and noticeable exposure to conversations and other distractions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, from multiple sources. Some driving with various road conditions may be required with exposure to a variety of temperatures and walking surfaces.
    • Hazards: Exposure to repetitive motion during data entry requires a high level of compliance with best practices of ergonomics, body mechanics and suggested breaks. May have exposure to blood and body fluids; during the occasional performance of 1st aid or CPR. This position may require de-escalating verbally or physically aggressive individuals, according to identified procedures. Unpredictable employee interactions are also possible.
