Job Title: Surgical Technologist

Description:
Provides surgical technology to direct and indirect care and service.
Assists surgeon and performs operative/invasive procedures.
Serves as a resource to other technologists and trains new technologists and students.
Functions as an informal lead technologist role as needed.
Mentors peers and utilizes additional education gained through certification.
Prepares for surgeon-specific operative/invasive procedures in a timely, accurate, effective, and efficient manner.
Ensures instruments, equipment, and sutures are appropriate, complete, and functional.
Sets up a sterile field and is scrubbed prior to patient entering the room.
Organizes case setup so that another can step into an organized back table and mayo.
Ensures appropriate items are available without unnecessary openings.
Maintains fluid and non-redundant motions during procedures.
Turns around setup time for a variety of case types within acceptable ranges.
Collaborates with surgeons prior to cases and adjusts setups as necessary.
Precepts surgical techs and registered nurses to prepare for surgeon-specific procedures.
Scrubs on simple to complex procedures across various specialties.
Operates the mayo setup independently and is aware of the surgeon's techniques and preferences.
Adapts style to match the surgeon and procedures confidently and competently during routine and emergency procedures.
Prepares for sequencing, such as clamp, cut, tie.
Anticipates needs and provides support to ensure attention remains on the operative field.
Observes techniques of self and others, intervening appropriately when necessary.
Performs in first scrub, first assist, and second scrub roles.
Completes case closing activities, such as dressing application, transfer, and turnover.
Teaches registered nurses to scrub on a variety of cases.
Plans and anticipates expected and unexpected intra-operative events.
Identifies and intervenes with timely responses to intra-operative changes.
Maintains calm, confident, and steady actions during procedures.
Prepares for the unexpected and uses resources effectively.
Anticipates needs for problem-prone and/or high-risk procedures.
Observes and maintains a quiet environment during patient induction.
Protects patient privacy through actions and reminds others to do the same.
Serves as a mentor for staff and students in planning for surgical events.
Demonstrates critical thinking skills and job knowledge to enhance performance and teach others.
Available for on-call hours outside scheduled work hours, including after-hours, weekends, and holidays.
Responds to on-call notifications within required timeframes.
Adheres to assigned weekly, weekend, and holiday call shifts according to policies and protocols.
Communicates and collaborates effectively with others.
Serves as a knowledgeable resource and shares information appropriately.
Ensures counts are performed timely and reflects an understanding of responsibilities with the circulating nurse.
Communicates needs both verbally and nonverbally in a timely manner.
