The Principal Scientist, Functional Ingredients & Bioactives provides scientific and regulatory expertise to enable the development and execution of Mars Snacking mid to long-term growth strategy achieved through breakthrough innovation for competitive advantage. This role involves identifying and navigating regulatory pathways and frameworks to substantiate claims for novel functional ingredients and bioactives in Mars Wrigley products.

The base pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between the range listed below, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including but not limited to, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Principal Scientist Scientific & Regulatory Affairs (SRA), Functional Ingredients & Bioactives
The Principal Scientist, Functional Ingredients & Bioactives provides scientific and regulatory expertise to enable the development and execution of Mars Snacking mid to long-term growth strategy achieved through breakthrough innovation for competitive advantage. This role involves identifying and navigating regulatory pathways and frameworks to substantiate claims for novel functional ingredients and bioactives in Mars Wrigley products.
What are we looking for?
- Masters in Nutrition Sciences, Biochemistry or related human or pet health science. PhD preferred.
- Minimum 5 years' experience in scientific & regulatory affairs with food products and/or related product categories (such as food supplements, cosmetics) with proficiency in food law and novel ingredient/claims approvals.
- A solid working knowledge of regulatory and human health issues; demonstrated track record of working successfully across functions to achieve shared goals; and proven ability to interact cross-functionally at all levels within a large organization are required.
- Demonstrated experience and success partnering with trade associations and government agencies to clarify and resolve regulatory matters is required.
What will be your key responsibilities?
- Develops and communicates science-based information, regulatory positions and guidance to key internal stakeholders (Health & Wellness CoE, Science & Technology, Product Development, Corporate Affairs, Legal, Senior Leadership) on functional claims and emerging scientific and regulatory issues of interest to Mars Snacking
- Manages regulatory programs related to functional ingredients and bioactives and their use in finished products by collaborating with internal cross-functional stakeholders, in addition to consultants and external industry/scientific groups
- Monitors external scientific and regulatory landscape in topic area of expertise to proactively guide business toward right fit solutions to satisfy emerging consumer demand spaces and Mars growth ambition.
- Provides global guidance across the R&D function in the area of functional ingredients & claims and actively participates in the development of new innovation concepts, claims, standards, and relevant policies.
- Guides Mars' claims review and approval activities and provides strong partnership with Science & Technology business partners for the advancement of innovation platforms through Mars 'Technical Readiness Level' process.
- Drives regulatory-enabled development of consumer demand spaces by identifying opportunities for value creation.
- Evaluates finished product and claims readiness with a multi-dimensional approach (risk level/external landscape/required time and investment), while providing best pathway for scientific substantiation to ensure compliancy upon commercialization
