We are seeking an experienced and strategic Instructional Design Manager to lead a team of instructional designers in developing innovative, high-quality learning experiences as part of the EdPlus Digital Learning (EDL) team. Every day you'll make a difference in the lives of others by fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and instructional excellence. You will be responsible for coaching and upskilling staff, ensuring the implementation of instructional design best practices, and optimizing workflows and operational processes to support scalable, efficient course development.

You will play a critical role in achieving both strategic and operational goals outlined by leadership, in alignment with the broader objectives of EdPlus and Arizona State University. You will ensure that course design initiatives support ASU's charter of expanding access to high-quality education through digital innovation while driving continuous improvement and operational efficiency.

Essential Duties:

Strategic Leadership and Team Development:
  • Cultivate a high-performing team by identifying strengths, growth opportunities, and clear development pathways for each instructional designer.
  • Lead high-profile, complex instructional design initiatives that support ASU Online's most innovative and high-impact program launches.
  • Foster a vision-based collaborative team culture that encourages connection, creativity, experimentation, and knowledge sharing.
  • Recognize and develop leadership potential within the team, preparing future leaders to take on more strategic roles within ASU.
  • Set clear goals and expectations, providing documented, regular feedback and performance evaluations.
  • Assist in hiring, developing, and evaluating instructional design team members to build a high-performing team.
  • Assist in establishing priorities and developing goals and objectives consistent with those of EdPlus and the University.

Instructional Design and Course Development:
  • Oversee the design and development of engaging, effective, and accessible learning experiences.
  • Champion the use of evidence-based instructional design models and best practices to support diverse learner needs.
  • Encourage innovative approaches to course design, including emerging technologies, academic media integration, and active learning strategies.
  • Establish evidence-based design principles that improve student engagement metrics while ensuring consistency and quality across program offerings.
  • Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement:
  • Establish and maintain standards for instructional design quality, consistency, and accessibility.
  • Implement and refine processes for ongoing course evaluation, maintenance, and enhancement.
  • Utilize learning analytics and feedback loops to assess course effectiveness and drive iterative improvements.
  • Ensure alignment with EdPlus and ASU's commitment to scalability, sustainability, and student success.

Project and Workflow Management:
  • Develop and manage efficient workflows to support scalable program/course development and revision processes.
  • Collaborate with faculty, college leadership, and other stakeholders to align instructional design initiatives with ASU's institutional goals.
  • Ensure timely delivery of instructional design projects while balancing competing priorities.

Stakeholder Collaboration and Communication:
  • Serve as a key liaison between instructional designers, faculty, academic college/unit leadership, and technical teams.
  • Lead discussions on instructional design strategy, best practices, and emerging trends.
  • Implement transparent communication channels while serving as an advocate for instructional design best practices at department/institutional levels.
  • Advocate for instructional design priorities within broader ASU/institutional initiatives.

General:
  • Work with key stakeholders to develop metrics and key performance indicators for student and project success.
  • Participate in strategic planning and formulation of the department's course development and delivery plans and policies.
  • Manage projects effectively (e.g., manage time, establish priorities, distribute responsibilities, meet milestones and deliverables).
  • Work with administration/researchers to define, adapt, develop, implement, and evaluate various student success initiatives.
  • Seek, evaluate, and implement new and emerging technologies that have potential value for online teaching and learning.
  • Design, develop and deliver effective presentations.
  • Expand your network of contacts to support the goals of EdPlus, ASU Online and the University.
  • Assist in the design, development, and implementation of new faculty and student support resources for the Teach Online website, the Faculty Center, Guru and other EdPlus, ASU Online and university communications channels.
  • Assume or coordinate other duties/projects as assigned or directed.

NOTE: This is not a fully remote position. Must be able to reliably commute to Scottsdale, Arizona.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree in Educational Technology or related field.
  • Evidence of five (5) or more years of experience in instructional design, online learning, or a related field, with at least two (2) years in a leadership or management role.
  • Demonstrated experience leading instructional design teams in a higher education setting, preferably in online learning environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects, set priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge and application with project management tools (Airtable, Jira, etc.)
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of instructional design principles, adult learning theories, and accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, UDL).
  • Demonstrated experience working with faculty and academic leadership to develop high-quality online courses and programs.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in learning management systems (Canvas), instructional technologies, and academic media tools.
  • Proven skills in data-driven decision-making, including the use of learning analytics and assessment to inform course design and improvements.
  • Demonstrated experience fostering a collaborative, high-performing team culture with a focus on mentorship and professional development.
  • Evidence of excellent communication, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to advocate for instructional design best practices at an institutional level.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of emerging trends in online education, including AI, XR (extended reality), and adaptive learning technologies.

Working Environment:

Your desk will be in the beautiful, cutting-edge, and collaborative workspace at SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center. The Center houses a diverse business community that links technology, research, education, and entrepreneurship to position ASU and Greater Phoenix as global leaders in the knowledge economy.

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting or standing. Daily use of desktop or laptop computer is required, along with the ability to clearly communicate in English to perform essential duties.

EdPlus at ASU supports flexible work options, ranging from alternate work schedules to hybrid remote work schedules, subject to approvals per ASU policy. (This is NOT a fully remote position.)

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field including two (2) years managerial experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
