M&J is seeking a full-time Chief Inspector for Building / Vertical Construction opportunities within our Construction Management Division. Positions are open for projects within Connecticut and Southern New England.
Location: Based in our Hamden, Connecticut Office.
Responsibilities
Oversees inspection of all phases of building renovation and construction for conformance with contract requirements, building and fire safety codes, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other regulations. Inspects and approves all contractor sitework, ensures conformance with quality standards of contract and informs of substandard work, and ensures remedial action is taken. This important role will entail:
Reviews of shop drawings and materials submittals for adherence to contract plans and specifications and inspects for compliance with building system manufacturer's written requirements and industry and trade standards.
Evaluation of site conditions affecting construction costs and safety. Determination of the necessity for specification and design changes and making recommendations. Verification of the need for contract modification or change order work and ability to negotiate.
Overseeing the collection, recording, preparation, and analysis of data pertaining to materials testing / Special Inspections. Witness of required specified, code, and manufacturer tests for acceptance.
Consultation with architects, designers, owner's representatives, construction personnel and others on problems encountered. Providing supervision oversight and guidance to junior level inspectors.
Review of records and written reports of field inspections.
Review and evaluation of schedules of values and payments to contractors. Performance of field measurements and computations for quantities verification.
Providing technical advice regarding construction problems and constructability issues related to projects.
Review, approval, and process of construction documents as required under contract including Requests for Information (RFI).
Participating in project meetings, preparing meeting minutes, and follow up to action items.
Collaboration with the public, property, and business owners, when required, to address issues and concerns resulting from construction activities.
Development of punch-list for project at required phases of project and verification of completion.
Assisting in close-out of project, post-occupancy.
Performing related duties as required.
Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or related. CCM Certification or Building Official / Assistant Building Official certification, or obtainable within (6) months of employment. Considerable knowledge of building and site systems, building and fire-safety codes, the ADA, sustainability, and planning and zoning regulations. Knowledge, skill, and ability include:
Experience with construction contracts including specifications, plans, special provisions, and related documents, and familiarity with construction cost estimates, scheduling, manpower requirements, and budget controls.
Considerable knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in building design, construction, and maintenance, including the major trades.
Proper ability to read and interpret building contract plans and specifications and inspect construction work for conformance with contract.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Proper Interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Five (5) years of experience with construction projects involving the major building trades (e.g., site, structural, architectural, plumbing, HVAC, electrical).
Familiarity with CTDOT Form 819 (1.20) and the CTDOT Construction Manual.
Work experience utilizing using AASHTOWare and COMPASS for construction management and document control.
Special Requirements:
Must be willing to travel in lower New England.
A valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license is required.
Must be able to work during off-hours and weekends when necessary.
Physical Requirements:
May be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm from construction site environments and some discomfort from year-round weather conditions. Inspection requires climbing and entering excavations, walking on irregular surfaces, use of a ladder, and exposure to varying heights.
A routine ability to drive a motor vehicle to project sites, and an ability to remain stationary for periods at a time.
