Job Overview

Administers design, topology, and implementation of local area network. Manages and maintains switches, routers, and other network equipment like encoders and decoders. Analyzes traffic and bandwidth for optimum network performance to ensure organization's objectives are met. Must be familiar with concepts related to multicast traffic. Responsible for the acquisition, installation, maintenance, and usage of the organization's local area network. Manages network performance and maintains network security. Ensures that security procedures are implemented and enforced. Installs all network software. Evaluates, develops and maintains Unified Communications (UC) systems. Troubleshoots network problems. Establishes and implements network policies, procedures, and standards and ensures their conformance with information systems and organization objectives. Creates and trains users on network operation.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties & Job Functions:
  • Manages installation of network hardware.
  • Utilizes knowledge and understanding of both networking and telecommunications theory and practice.
  • Communicates with users, technical teams, and vendors on new technology and system upgrades and to determine software and hardware installation requirements.
  • Configures Switches and Routers.
  • Strong CISCO knowledge.
  • Provides network optimization for multicast layer 2 routing and switching.
  • Work with and provide artifacts for Risk Management.
  • Works in compliance with Federal Government (NIST/DISA) standards.
  • Performs switch firmware updates.
  • Has working knowledge of UNIX and LINUX.
  • Develops and monitors security procedures to safeguard systems from physical harm, viruses, unauthorized users, or damage to data.
  • Keeps network compliant with applicable Information Assurance Vulnerability Alerts (IAVA).
  • Provides technical guidance to engineers and government Stakeholders
  • Develops processes to stand up new switches and segments on the network
  • Works in collaboration with the Information System Security Officer
  • Presents recommendations related to purchasing and installing hardware, software, and Unified communications equipment.
  • Other tasking as directed.

Job Requirements

Mandatory:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Five years or more experience in Networking or highly related vocation.
  • Expert knowledge on the use and configuration of Red Hat Linux.
  • Expert level skills in configuring Cisco Switches.
  • One or more of the following Certificates: CISSP, Network + CCNP, CCIE, CCDE.
  • Understands basic hand tools and their uses.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance.
  • Successfully pass any employment background check and/drug test as required.

Preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related topic.
  • Familiar with Command and Control Systems.
  • Has knowledge of Common Submarine Radio Program.
  • Has knowledge of communication suites.
  • Skilled in Layer II Multicast Streams.
  • CompTIA Security+ certification.


Working Conditions:
  • Ability to work in low lit areas for long periods.
  • Occasional travel may be necessary.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work.


Physical Requirements:
  • This role is largely sedentary.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend or squat for at least five minutes.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to climb on a ladders and stairs.
