Director of Finance and Accounting

What to expect:

As the Director of Finance and Accounting you will report directly to the president of United Ground Express (UGE) and oversee the organization's financial operations, ensuring robust and accurate financial planning, analysis, and accounting practices. You will be responsible for maintaining financial health, overseeing financial reporting, driving budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis. You will also facilitate ad hoc budget requests, conduct scenario analysis to support decision making, create bid / RFP responses, lead pricing / contract negotiations, conduct capital investment analysis, and oversee financial compliance processes. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of financial management and accounting principles, the ability to lead and develop a high-performing finance team and possess the executive presence to represent the organization on financial matters both internally and to the UGE Board of Directors.

How you will make an impact:

Financial Leadership
  • Provide strategic financial oversight, direction, and decision support to senior management.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to establish financial goals and align them with business objectives.
  • Drive long-term financial planning and analysis to ensure UGE's financial goals are met.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions.
  • Present financial results and reports to the Senior Leadership Team, board of directors, and other stakeholders.


Accounting Management
  • Oversee the preparation of timely and accurate financial statements and reports in compliance with GAAP.
  • Ensure the integrity and accuracy of all financial transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Manage the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes to ensure timely financial reporting.


Budgeting and Forecasting
  • Lead the budgeting and forecasting process, working closely with department heads to develop and monitor departmental budgets.
  • Monitor and track performance against financial goals, providing regular updates including monthly, quarterly and annual variance reports as a well as recommendations for improvement.


Financial Analysis
  • Conduct detailed financial analysis to support business decisions, cost-saving initiatives, and resource allocation.
  • Provide insights into financial trends and key performance indicators (KPIs) to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
  • Create Presentations/scorecards/dashboards for use internally and externally.


Business Development
  • Oversee team responsible for business development aspects of UGE's organization, including the following:
    • Expanding the relationship with UA and OA partners for the purpose of increasing opportunities
    • Review of RFPs both from United and from other airline partners
    • Development of issuance of RFP responses
    • Review of contract, scope, service level agreements, and pricing negotiations with all customers
    • Submission of unsolicited bids for services where deemed appropriate
  • Oversee client relationship with other airline partners with a focus on expanding our relationship.


Team Leadership
  • Manage and develop a team of finance and accounting professionals, fostering a collaborative and performance-driven culture.
  • Provide mentorship, training, and professional development opportunities for team members.


What you will bring:

Required Experience, Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in finance and accounting, with at least 5 years in a managerial or leadership role.
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and accounting systems.
  • Proven ability to manage complex financial operations and lead a team.
  • Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with senior management, staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Strong proficiency in financial software (e.g., ERP systems, Excel, etc.) and financial modeling.
