Job Description

AbbVie is looking for a talented scientist with strong expertise in the biophysical characterization of peptides to join our team in Lake County, Illinois. This scientist, using NMR spectroscopy, computational methods, and other biophysical tools, will play a central role in the discovery and advancement of peptide-based therapeutics across a variety of disease areas. As an integral member of our team, you will drive projects and collaborate across various functions within our Discovery organization. Initial efforts will involve the development of robust workflows aimed at conformational evaluation of peptides, both free in solution, and when bound to a target protein. Success in this position requires a solid foundation in NMR spectroscopy and related computational methods, strong collaborative skills, and excellent communication skills. This role will require a high level of technical proficiency combined with a proactive approach to solving key problems and answering key questions related to peptide-based drug discovery.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop NMR experimental and computational workflows aimed at peptide resonance assignment and the determination of both free and protein-bound peptide conformations
  • Integrate these workflows into overall efforts aimed at discovering and advancing peptide-based therapeutics
  • Serve as a technical expert with respect to peptide biophysical analysis, especially NMR
  • Work closely with project teams to identify and solve key questions within the domain of peptide-based drug discovery
  • Stay ahead of scientific discoveries to integrate valuable insights into evolving strategies for peptide-based drug discovery especially with respect to biophysical analysis


Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Biophysics, or a related field, with at least 2 years of relevant experience in academia or industry
  • Solid expertise in the use of NMR spectroscopy to characterize peptides, especially, NMR resonance assignment and structure determination is a must
  • Proficiency in programming and the use of computational tools as applied to peptide characterization is a must
  • Experience with other biophysical methods would be a plus
  • Knowledge of peptide synthetic methodologies would be a plus
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, coupled with an independent and detail-oriented approach to problem-solving
  • Outstanding collaborative skills with the ability to work as part of a cross-functional team
  • Excellent communication skills, adaptable to a variety of audiences, both technical and non-technical
