Description:
Reporting to the Respiratory Therapy Program Director, the Director of Clinical Education is
responsible for the organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development, and
general effectiveness of clinical experiences for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in
Respiratory Care Program consistent with Long Island University policies and regulations. The
Director of Clinical Education is further expected to pursue ongoing, formal training designed to
maintain and upgrade his/her professional, instructional and administrative capabilities. This is a
full-time faculty position which includes several related tasks and assignments as indicated
below.
Responsibilities:
Arrange and negotiate all site contracts for clinical placement of students.
Coordinate and oversee all off-campus clinical courses, student placements, and
orientations, under the direction of the program director.
Supervise and evaluate the effectiveness of all clinical instructors.
Serve as mentor and role model for students; provide feedback and counsel as needed.
Assures students develop competency during clinical practice especially in age related
or specialty areas; informs students of their progress to identify any learning deficiencies with
remediation in a reasonable time.
Offers crisis intervention efforts in conjunction with program and site policies.
Assure students follow all policies and procedures set in the Respiratory Care Program
Student Handbook and Long Island University Bulletin.
Interact with clinical site personnel to assure seamless integration of students to the
facility.
Reports all clinical incidents as per program policy.
Demonstrates expert knowledge of respiratory therapy principles and practice, including
patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients in the clinical rotation.
Demonstrates professionalism, leadership, and organizational and planning skills.
Assess student learning outcomes in all clinical courses on a regular basis and maintain
student records of progress in clinical; keeps statistical records.
Administers student clinical evaluation uniformly and equitably to all students in all
settings by maintaining inter-rater reliability.
Work with the Program Director, the program's Advisory Board, and Medical Director to
assure the professional integrity and relevance of clinical courses within the curriculum.
Provides input and assists the Program Director with program curriculum development
and revisions.
Ensure compliance with all relevant local, state, and national regulations, including those
set by accrediting bodies such as CoARC (Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care)
and other relevant organizations.
Teach courses in the program.
Advise Respiratory Care and prospective students.
Demonstrate ability to work effectively with diverse faculty and student population.
Demonstrate ability in written and verbal communication, interpersonal and
organizational skills, and computer literacy.
Other appropriate activities as assigned by the Program Director or Dean of Health
Sciences.

Working Conditions:
Full-time, with flexibility in hours to accommodate site visits.
Some evening and weekend hours may be required for site visits, or special projects.
The position involves both office work and travel to clinical sites.
Qualifications:
An earned Master's degree from a duly accredited educational institution or Master's
degree in progress to be completed within 2 years from a duly accredited educational institution.
New York State Licensure as a respiratory therapist or eligibility.
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board for
Respiratory Care.
Minimum of four (4) years experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist, of which at
least two (2) years should have been spent in clinical respiratory care and at least two (2) years
in a teaching position in an accredited respiratory care program either as an appointed faculty
member or as a clinical preceptor.
