Position Summary
The Senior Plumbing and Fire Protection Technical/Design Reviewer serves as a trusted technical advisor to the Owner, with responsibility for overseeing the quality and performance of plumbing and fire protection system designs on a large-scale design-build project. This individual will ensure the design-builder's deliverables meet the Owner's Project Requirements, applicable codes, industry standards, and long-term operational goals.
The role focuses on comprehensive technical review, interdisciplinary coordination, constructability analysis, and risk mitigation; ensuring all water, drainage, gas, and fire suppression systems are designed for efficiency, code compliance, and lifecycle value.

Position Summary
The Senior Plumbing and Fire Protection Technical/Design Reviewer serves as a trusted technical advisor to the Owner, with responsibility for overseeing the quality and performance of plumbing and fire protection system designs on a large-scale design-build project. This individual will ensure the design-builder's deliverables meet the Owner's Project Requirements, applicable codes, industry standards, and long-term operational goals.
The role focuses on comprehensive technical review, interdisciplinary coordination, constructability analysis, and risk mitigation; ensuring all water, drainage, gas, and fire suppression systems are designed for efficiency, code compliance, and lifecycle value.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth reviews of design documents including plumbing and fire protection drawings, specifications, riser diagrams, system calculations, and equipment schedules.
- Validate compliance with local and national codes (e.g., IPC, UPC, NFPA 13/14/20/24, ASPE, etc.) and sustainability goals where applicable.
- Evaluate system sizing, pipe routing, pressure zones, redundancy, flow rates, and capacity to ensure functionality and maintainability.
- Confirm appropriate coordination with structural and architectural constraints, ensuring penetrations, sleeves, and clearances are properly addressed.
- Coordinate with other technical reviewers (mechanical, electrical, civil, etc.) to ensure complete and integrated system design.
- Represent the Owner's interests during design development and review meetings, design charrettes, and technical workshops.
- Provide design commentary and constructability insights to the Owner and design-builder teams, including review logs and summary reports.
- Review submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, change orders, and proposed value engineering (VE) options for conformance with the approved design.
- Participate in site walks, inspection of mock-ups, and verification of installed work against approved plans.
- Support commissioning efforts and assist with final inspections, witness testing, and turnover documentation for plumbing and fire protection systems.
Qualifications
Education & Licensure
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Certified Plumbing Designer (CPD) credential strongly preferred.
- NICET certification in fire protection systems is a plus.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in plumbing and fire protection design, with at least 5 years in a technical QA/QC or review capacity.
- Prior experience with large-scale, design-build or CM-at-risk projects is essential.
- Background in public infrastructure, healthcare, higher education, or mission-critical facilities preferred.
- Expertise in plumbing and fire protection system design, hydraulic calculations, equipment selection, and code interpretation.
- Strong ability to identify coordination issues and provide practical, performance-based solutions.
- Familiarity with design tools such as AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Bluebeam, and pipe sizing software.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
