Job Summary:

Reporting directly to the Chief Nursing Officer, the Director, Surgical Services provides supervision and guidance in the operating room and operating room education. This includes collaboration with nursing staff regarding patient care issues in all areas of the hospital including quality of care, patient safety, patient flow, and other clinical issues. The Director is responsible for the overall direction of the Surgical Services areas including planning, organizing, the quality of work, staff productivity, financial management, and maintaining good working relationships with physicians and employees. Ability to provide patient care in all clinical areas as needed on a relief basis. Director, Surgical Services is responsible for overall direction of the Perioperative Business Coordinator.

- Directs operations of service line units and associated hospital personnel. Selects, develops and counsels the service line staff consistent with human resource management practices and policies. Ensures continuing education for service line staff so proper credentials can be maintained.

- Plans, develops and implements a service line strategic plan that emphasizes common vision and joint planning with the overall hospital strategic plan. Receives input from and concurrence of representatives from such areas as medical staff, nursing, marketing, finance, and joint ventures.

- Devises and implements appropriate service line related reporting relationships. Works with various hospital personnel to develop, analyze and report information needed on a regular basis or to meet special information needs.

- Plans, prepares, implements, monitors, and controls the service line operational and capital budget to ensure sound fiscal management consistent with the goals of the hospital. Consolidates services in order to achieve economies of scale and optimize resource utilization. Coordinates acquisition and development of new technologies for quality and cost effectiveness.

- Develops objectives to evaluate quality of the service provided, assists in development of standards of care policies and procedures, budgets for functional departments, and evaluates staffing mix. Implements uniform clinical pathways, case management, and quality measures.

- Collaborates with various departments and organizations, internal and external, to develop and implement marketing strategies for new and/or current services.

- Ensures compliance with Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards of care in assigned areas and that the service line is in compliance with all regulations regarding provisions of service.

- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Nursing with Master's degree in Nursing or related field and seven (7) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations:

Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment. Depending on the unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.
