About the Role
The Office of the Chief Health & Safety Officer (CHSO) plays a vital role in furthering the mission of the Port Authority by ensuring the workplace meets all occupational health and safety legal expectations and actively supports the highest quality occupational health and safety programs to ensure the safe movement of the Port Authority's customers, partners, employees, and stakeholders every day.
Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Environmental and Occupational Health Manager, the selected candidate will be responsible for supervising professionals and oversee corporate activities for Public and Occupational Health matters. Through the use of expert technical and professional staff this individual ensures the comprehensive delivery of services to protect our employees, tenants, patrons, the public and the agency's properties to maintain regulatory compliance and to reduce the Agency 's liability exposure and the loss or interruption to essential PA/PATH revenues streams. Additionally, this position will require that the successful candidate to work with the Environmental and Occupational Health Manager to continue to provide a high level of customer service to our developers and contractors
This position provides expert technical and professional services related to evaluating and measuring Agency and tenant compliance associated with Public and Occupational Health codes, policies, procedures, industry standards and state and federal regulations by:

This position provides expert technical and professional services related to evaluating and measuring Agency and tenant compliance associated with Public and Occupational Health codes, policies, procedures, industry standards and state and federal regulations by:
- Directing and managing professional evaluations and inspections activities at the Port Authority facilities
- Managing the review process for contractor Health and Safety Plans
- Evaluating Tenant Construction and Alteration Process (TCAP) plans and submittals
- Responding to emergencies and public / environmental health crises that arise within the Agency
- This position requires frequent travel to all Port Authority/PA TH facilities and hours may include some early morning, evening and weekend shifts as well as to respond 24 - 7 - 365 to address public health issues.
- It is essential that the successful candidate develop a high degree of understanding in the use of E-Builder and other software platforms
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in occupational and environmental health science, public health, occupational safety and health or a related scientific discipline such as biology, chemistry, physics, environmental engineering, etc. from an accredited college or university.
- Registered Environmental Health Specialist or equivalent.
- Minimum 5 years ' practical experience in Public Health or Occupational Health
- Applicants must be committed to the use of Safety Management System principles to further improve the Agency's safety performance.
- Strong diversified experience in reviewing, interpreting and implementing public and environmental health codes, including OSHA, NYSDOH, NJDOH, CDC, NJDEP, NYSDEC, NYCDEP, NYCDOH, EPA, NSF/ANSI standards, and industry guidelines and standards.
- Proficient in occupational health and safety principles
- Demonstrated ability in conducting occupational exposure assessments
- Demonstrated proficiency and experience in reading and interpreting plans and drawings.
- Applicants must possess a valid driver's license
Desired Qualifications
- Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to deal effectively with staff at all levels internally and externally.
- Ability to manage a variety of highly technical tasks and projects from start to finish.
- Knowledge of instruments used to measure physical, chemical and biological hazards.
- 2 Years' of supervisory/management experience.
- Ability to work independently
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to coordinate and implement Public and Occupational Health programs.
- Proficient in the use of computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook.
