Job Summary

The Vice President of Operational Excellence is a strategic leader within the Internal Consulting Group responsible for driving efficiency, innovation, and excellence across all operational functions within the organization. This senior leader role focuses on improving patient experience and outcomes, enhancing cost efficiency, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement while serving as the organizational expert in operational excellence and application of performance improvement methodology. The VP of Operational Excellence collaborates with leadership teams across the organization to implement transformative strategies that create value in alignment with organizational strategy.

The Vice President of Operational Excellence reports directly to the SVP of the Internal Consulting Group and serves as a senior leader within the Transformation Office. The role interfaces with leaders and teams across the organization, with strong working relationships with Executive Team leaders, Region Presidents, Operating Unit leaders, and leaders and teams throughout Novant Health.

Qualifications

  • Education: 4 Year / Bachelors Degree in a related field, required. Graduate Degree, preferred. MBA, MHA, or related field; preferred.
  • Experience:
    • 5+ years driving major performance improvement efforts in either finance, market operations or internal consulting roles in a healthcare organization; required.
    • Minimum of 10 years of leadership experience, preferred.
    • 5 years' experience with major consulting firm strongly preferred.
  • Additional Skills Required:
    • Transformation and change management subject matter knowledge with an understanding of research on what drives successful change.
    • Expert in operational excellence/industrial engineering principles, with ability to serve as organizational expert in guiding and influencing system to adopt operations resulting in the highest levels of safety, quality, and efficiency.
    • Advanced data and analytics skills, with ability to analyze and transform large data sets into meaningful insights. Ability to guide and mentor Operational Excellence team in data analytics and interpretation.
    • Leadership skills and experience capable of developing Operational Excellence and Internal Consulting Group team members with the necessary consulting skills to serve the changing needs of the organization.
    • Advanced and proven subject matter expertise across major healthcare performance improvement levers including workforce, supplies, pharmacy, purchased services, lab, clinical operations, revenue cycle, physician enterprise, and capacity optimization.
    • Financial management skills with fluency across balance sheet and P&L, and ability to interpret financial statements and understand impact of performance improvement activity on financial performance.
    • Critical thinking and conceptual problem-solving skills with ability to rapidly identify root issues, reconcile short and long-term trade-offs, and evaluate alternatives with stakeholders.
    • Flexible interpersonal and leadership style, ranging from being assertive in order to drive accountability and action, to collaborative and motivational as situation requires. Must have credibility and ability to influence and coach cross-functional leaders at all levels of the organization.
    • Strong communication skills and ability to motivate leaders at all levels of the organization including executive team leaders.
    • Unquestioned aspirational and independent mindset with focus on motivating others to maximize impact for the organization.
