The Research Scientist at Luxium Solutions, LLC will play a pivotal role in advancing our innovative materials development initiative. Primary job responsibilities include developing the growth processes of new single crystalline materials such as Ga2O3 leading to new product sales. Supporting responsibilities of this position include identifying, testing, and maintaining raw material stocks for the research and development group; designing experiments and conducting growth trials of crystalline materials; designing furnace modifications to aid in crystal growth and performance; tracking performance properties of grown crystals; and assisting in the transition of R&D activities to the production group. The research scientist should be familiar with semiconducting materials and general crystallography. It would be helpful for this individual to have experience and/or familiarity with various high temperature oxides such as sapphire and garnets, and with various growth methods such as Czochralski, EFG, HEM, and Bridgman, among others.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the development of Ga2O3 single crystal growth processes, including the planning and carrying out of growth trials, and reporting on overall development.
  • Provide support for characterization of Ga2O3 crystals, either those grown internally or sourced from external vendors or collaborators. This includes characterization of material in house, and management of material sent for analysis externally.
  • Assist in defect identification, analysis, material improvement and scale up of EFG grown oxides.
  • Stay abreast of and provide information to others at Luxium Solutions on technical advances in the field of functional materials with a focus on materials for power electronics

Requirements
  • Master's Degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or related field; PhD preferred.
  • 5 years of experience in ceramic materials development - crystal growth, processing, characterization, etc. (2 years PhD work considered to contribute as well as any post-doctoral work, preference is given to industrial experience.)
  • 5 years of experience in crystal growth technologies preferred.
  • Deep understanding of solid-state physics and/or material science.
  • Experience with computer software appropriate to an industrial R&D environment. LabVIEW, 3D CAD SolidWorks, CREO, Inventor, etc.
  • MS Office Suite, Minitab, or other related programs.
  • Experience with defect engineering of ceramic materials and devices.
  • Experience with crystal growth methods such as Czochralski and EFG preferred.
  • Familiarity with semiconducting materials, their use in electronics applications, and modular instrumentation with the ability to use these for materials testing and characterization preferred.
