Job Description

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to become a key player in promoting community safety as the Deputy Superintendent at the Iowa Department of Corrections - 6th District. The Deputy Superintendent will serve as the assistant to the District Director. The sixth district encompasses 6 counties in Iowa (Jones, Johnson, Linn, Tama, Iowa and Benton).

The Assistant Director is responsible for developing, supporting and facilitating the achievement of the department's goals. The responsibilities will encompass a diverse range of duties such as:
Leading field and residential Division Manager positions and other supervising staff as assigned.
Providing operational oversight, support and evaluation of probation/parole, treatment and residential facility operations and administration.
Assumes duties/responsibilities of the District Director in their absence, maintaining all operational, fiscal and legal aspects of the district in collaboration with IDOC Central Office.
Serves a member of the district's executive leadership team, meeting as scheduled and participating in high level decision-making processes.
Regularly visits all district work units to maintain employee relationships, assess physical plant needs and verify adherence to safety standards.
Participates in various personnel processes, including hiring, promotion, and employee discipline. In consultation with the District Director, takes the lead on employee grievances or complaints.
Participates in designated statewide initiatives, programs and project related to service implementation and evaluation.
Collaborates with local services providers and justice system partners to identify and address gaps in service delivery to support the department's mission. Develops and presents contracts, MOU's and other agreements to the District Director for approval.
Provides input and oversight for the development and evaluation of the district's human, fiscal and physical plant resources. Provides input on development, implementation and ongoing monitoring of the district budget.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, and experience equal to five years of full-time work in the management of a correctional, mental health, intellectual disability or juvenile correctional or training facility.
  • Five years of full-time work experience as a Correctional Treatment Director, Correctional Security Director, or other equivalent management position in the Iowa Department of Corrections or Iowa Judicial District Departments of Correctional Services.
  • Ten years of full time supervisory experience in the Iowa Department of Corrections or Iowa Judicial District Departments of Correctional Services.
  • Five years of full time experience as an Assistant Superintendent, Treatment Services Director, Treatment Manager or other equivalent position in the Department of Human Services.
