Role and Facility Information
The Department of Ophthalmology is seeking a full-time comprehensive ophthalmologist for a permanent position. The successful applicant will provide comprehensive ophthalmology services, providing specialized eye care, diagnostics and treatments to meet the community's vision needs. Procedures including therapeutic lasers etc. are performed in the minor treatment room in the ambulatory care area of the University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC). This is a comprehensive position, however subspecialty training would be beneficial.
This is a fee for service position. There is also a Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA) in place which pays an additional 12.6% on all MSP eligible billings as well an annual retention premium of $19,526.40. Continuing Medical Education funding is also available with increasing amounts based on years of service to a maximum of $6,600 per year. Additional RSA incentives include a recruitment stipend of $9,000 - $15,000 and a one-time recruitment incentive of $15,000. Both of these incentives require a one year commitment.
The successful applicant would be expected to do an equal share of on-call work under the Provincial Medical On-Call Availability Program with a stipend provided per call shift. There is also an expectation that the successful applicant would participate in medical student teaching with appropriate compensation provided and an appointment to the UBC Faculty of Medicine.
Prince George is BC's northern capital and has a population of approx. 87,000 with a catchment area of approx. 400,000. There is a regional international airport offering a short 1 hour flight to Vancouver and direct flights to various other destinations. For the outdoor enthusiast the area offers limitless activities including golfing, biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, skiing, hockey, water activities and ATVing. There are several recreational facilities including 6 indoor ice rinks, 2 indoor swimming pools, The Northern Sport Centre at the University of Northern British Columbia and numerous private facilities. Prince George also has a very active arts community supporting an art gallery, museum, professional symphony and professional live theatre.
Prince George is home to the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) and the College of New Caledonia, both offering excellent educational opportunities. UNBC is currently ranked #2 by Maclean's on their annual list of primarily undergraduate schools and was #1 in 2022.
The UBC Northern Medical program in Prince George was established in 2004 as a response to a rally held in 2000 by the residents of Prince George for increased physician numbers and improved rural medical access. The program graduates 32 medical students and trains several residents a year.
Applicants should be certified or eligible to be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as well the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
