Job Summary:

The Manager, Critical Care Clinical Support Programs supports Wellstar ECMO services in the community by overseeing the clinical and operational components of the ECMO program and team. This position will assist in the planning, development, and implementation of the ECMO Program as it expands to offer complex care to cardiovascular and respiratory patients. In addition, this manager oversees the operations of the hospital's Rapid Response Team.
This individual will be responsible for program goals and operations regarding all aspects of the ECMO program, including writing policies and procedures that support clinical care and operational excellence of the program. Provides direction to establish, monitor and evaluate the quality of care given to ECMO patients and to ensure our patients are provided with the highest quality of care. An additional focus of this position is to provide vision and ensure the program stays attentive to current and future community needs.
This individual brings to the role clinical expertise to support ongoing efforts in the program management and enhancement. Serves as a clinical expert and consultant with nursing and other team members. Responsible for clinical evaluation of potential ECMO patients, case reviews, and patient management concerns and for data collection and ELSO Registry. Coordinates initial and ongoing education programs, testing and competencies. This leader will oversee the activities of the ECMO team to ensure compliance with regulatory, department and role-specific requirements.
The Manager will oversee an interdisciplinary Rapid Response Team with highly trained clinical team members designed to respond to cardiac and/or respiratory emergencies at the hospital. The leader will manage not only the function of the team and it's members, but also report and evaluate the activities and effectiveness of the team.
This individual will round on team members and patients. In patient interactions, seeks to understand the therapy received by the patient, the patient experience and collect information to improve the experience. Assists in coordinating and staffing for ECMO and Rapid Response Team services. Ensures compliance with state, federal and regulatory standards.
The Manager Critical Care Clinical Support Programs assumes responsibility for implementing standards of practice, program policies and procedures and maintaining and improving the quality of patient care delivered. Creates an environment which enables the Wellstar to fulfill its vision, mission and goals, fosters communication and collaborative practice with physicians and other departments.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Oversight of Primary ECMO Program
* Define scope of service, goals and deliverables specific to ECMO program
* Collaborate with all disciplines involved in caring for the ECMO patient population, Clinical Nurse Managers, and Administrative Leadership in the development and achievement of the ECMO program at Kennestone Hospital
* Coordinates any new services and construction / renovation projects and growth of services in the community
* Serve as a program lead and resource for system facilities to ensure cohesive care for the ECMO patient.
* Collaborate with best practice group with a goal of consistent system wide ECMO services.
* Collaborate with Accreditation Coordinators to ensure Joint Commission and other regulatory agency certification and/or accreditation.
* Providing system coordination and leadership among the Wellstar facilities through current best practice.
* Responsible for decisions on maintenance and upgrading of ECMO equipment as well as equipment purchases and installations
* Cultivates positive relationships between departments.
* Supports organized patient, employee and physician satisfaction activities to increase metrics
* Routinely review opportunities in areas of responsibility and develop solutions
* Maintains up-to-date knowledge of new trends, technology, and methods to ensure effective and competitive services.
* Establish and monitor key departmental performance metrics for quality, throughput, patient satisfaction, revenue, and expense.
* Develop and update program policies and associated communication documents
Oversight of Hospital Rapid Response Team
* Collaborate with Hospital leader on the design and scope of services of the Rapid Response Team
* Oversee the members of the team to ensure clinical competence, role clarity and accountability
* Collect and review call data to ensure effectiveness and identify improvement opportunities
Accreditation and Regulatory Compliance
* Evaluates and ensures compliance with all Joint Commission requirements for ECMO accreditation.
* Assumes responsibility for program management of the ECMO Program and associated accreditation and regulatory requirements and practices
* Develop and provide education for staff necessary for the successful certification and recertification of the ECMO program per Joint Commission guidelines.
* Oversight of Community ECMO/Cardiovascular Awareness events
* Oversee and maintain performance improvement activities in compliance with Joint Commission standards
Financial Operations
* Supports ECMO by providing core financial and operations data and dashboards to support market growth, patient experience, and clinic operations.
* In conjunction with Executive Director Nursing and ECMO Physician Leaders, plans for future needs of the service and collaborative areas, including personnel, equipment, supplies program development, inter- department, and inter-institutional relationships in order to maintain market competitiveness in the community.
* Provide consultation to assist in charge capture, cost control, efficiency and utilization of ECMO services
* Monitors appropriate utilization of resources in accordance with capital and operational budget initiatives for ECMO
* Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by preparing assigned service and collaborating area operating and capital budgets, monitoring budget reports and managing variance discrepancies to ensure cost-effective unit operations.
* Monitors budget variances and monthly cost center responsibility report responses.
* Collaborates with finance team to ensure appropriate CPT and reimbursement practices in concert with Revenue Management Department.
Project Management (Special Projects)
* Serves as project manager with timeliness of initiatives assigned
* Effectively communicate program expectations to team members in a timely and clear fashion.
* Estimate resources and participants needed to achieve program goals.
* Set and continually manage program expectations with team members.
* Delegate tasks and responsibilities to appropriate personnel.
* Identify and resolve issues and conflicts within the Stroke program.
* Plan and schedule project timeliness and milestones using appropriate tools.
* Track project milestones and deliverables.
* Develop and deliver progress reports, proposals, requirements documentation and presentations as assigned.
* Manage changes in project scope, identify potential crises and devise contingency plans.
* Coach, mentor, motivate and supervise Stroke Oversight team members and influence them to take positive action and accountability for their assigned work.
* Development and maintenance of Neuroscience/Stroke website
Talent Partnership
* Participates in the selection of qualified personnel for specific roles to support the ECMO program
* Assures team member compliance with System and facility policies and procedures, standards of practice and documentation standards.
* Recognizes staff for achievements through positive feedback
Performs other duties as assigned
Complies with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

Required Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Required or
Bachelor's Degree in clinical, business or other similar domain with completion of an accredited Cardiovascular Perfusionist program.
Required and
Master's Degree Nursing, Healthcare, Business or similar domain.
Preferred

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

  • Cert Clin Perfusionists or Reg Nurse (Single State) or RN - Multi-state Compact
  • Basic Life Support or BLS - Instructor


Additional License(s) and Certification(s):

Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion and hold licensure by the Georgia Composite Medical Board as a clinical perfusionist Required or
If BSN/MSN degree: currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Georgia or hold a privilege to practice in the State of Georgia under the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC). Required and
Must receive a current ACLS card from the American Heart Association within 180 Days Required and
If BSN/MSN, prefer additional certification in area of specialty. Preferred

Required Minimum Experience:

Minimum 2 years ECMO experience Required and
Extensive knowledge of cardiac and pulmonary anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and clinical management of ECMO patients. Required and
Must be able to interact with physicians and be able to handle emergency and stressful situations. Required and
Minimum 1 year to three years experience in program management, process improvement or similar role along with healthcare quality and performance improvement knowledge Preferred and
Experience that may be applied to running and improving performance of individuals and programs as a whole Required and
Experience overseeing or guiding the activities of others through supervisory, lead or charge experience Preferred
