Basic Function

Under the direction of an administrator or manager, plans, develops, coordinates, implements, and maintains the District's computer network systems and telecommunications operations; provides technical advice and support to District personnel on computer network and telecommunications technology; diagnoses, troubleshoots, and monitors computer and network system performance levels.

Representative Duties

1. Implements and supports the District's computer network systems including managing and coordinating network programming, user account maintenance, mail administration, network security, and backup activities. E

2. Provides technical advice and support to District personnel on network and telecommunications technology. E

3. Researches, evaluates, and recommends network standards, hardware, software, and telecommunications equipment including but not limited to hubs, routers, bridges, gateways, and firewall. E

4. Plans, designs, installs, and maintains, the District's Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN) including the connection to internet and campus network program such as email, online forms, scheduling, FTP, Telnet, GOPHER, and World Wide Web. E

5. Recommends, installs, services, troubleshoots, and repairs a variety of computer equipment connected to the District's network. E

6. Participates in establishing and testing computer hardware, operating systems, and peripheral standards; may participate in software testing. E

7. Installs, tests, maintains, and reconfigures both network and standalone personal computer systems; uses operating systems and diagnostic tools to troubleshoot software and hardware issues. E

8. Plans, recommends, installs, and maintains computer hardware, software, terminals, cables, and associated equipment; installs and configures network servers, updates operating system, preventative maintenance system disk, shutdown, and startup on District's networks. E

9. Develops, coordinates, and provides customer support such as technical expertise, consultation, documentation, and training for supported software and hardware products on District's network and computer systems; provides procedural and informational support to faculty, staff, and/or students regarding network activities and performance. E

10. Coordinates with vendors to schedule warranty repairs and delivery of equipment; resolves vendor matters regarding purchases, returns, installations, and repairs. E

11. Troubleshoots and monitors computer and network problems; performs diagnostics on appropriate data to ensure system performance levels. E

12. Performs a variety of clerical and administrative responsibilities in support of the department's day-to-day activities and/or operations utilizing a variety of communication modalities including but not limited to answers and responds to phone calls, emails, text messages, and chat platforms; opens, screens, and distributes mail and correspondence; photocopies documents and requests duplication services; ensures maintenance and repairs of assigned work areas, facilities, or equipment; enters various requests for services from IT, Facilities, and Maintenance; contacts vendors for equipment service, when needed; follows-up with vendors to ensure satisfactory completion of requests; may perform simple repairs or maintenance to standard office equipment. E

13. Performs related duties that support the overall objective of the position.

Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline; AND
Three (3) years of experience troubleshooting and resolving computer, networking, and telecommunications problems.
Experience in Windows NT or Netware networks operating systems, installation, and cabling.
Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.

License Certificates/Credentials
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver license.

Distinguishable Characteristics

The Network Specialist performs moderately complex and specialized responsibilities; serves as a technical advisor within the IT Division related to PC performance and networking systems; performs duties related to network systems; designs, develops, integrates, and administers the District's network systems to provide efficient and reliable infrastructures to effectively operate to share applications and information to District staff, students, and the public.

The Network Specialist is distinguished from the Network Administrator in that the latter classification assists with network architecture and participates in research and analysis of technology alternative resources; plans for network system upgrades and expansions to ensure appropriate network capacity to support meeting the District's operational requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, operate personal computers and other standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms.

Position Description
