The Position
The City of Maple Grove is seeking a dedicated and experienced Deputy Chief to oversee and manage the daily operations of the Fire Department, ensuring efficient resource deployment and service delivery. Responsibilities
Operational Oversight: Supervise daily operations of assigned divisions, ensuring efficient resource allocation and maximum delivery of fire department services to the community.
Administrative Support: Assist the Fire Chief in all aspects of departmental administration, including the interpretation of policies, procedures, and the development of operational guidelines tailored for effective service delivery.
Records Management: Ensure the accuracy and compliance of the fire department's records management systems, maintaining organized, accessible, and up-to-date information.
Budget Management: Aid in the preparation and administration of the budget for assigned divisions, closely monitoring expenditures to ensure adherence to financial guidelines.
Community Engagement: Develop and implement initiatives to improve community relations, conduct outreach to educate the public on emergency preparedness, and facilitate productive meetings with stakeholders.
Regulatory Compliance: Monitor adherence to established rules, regulations, and operational procedures, and maintain regular communication with the Fire Chief about compliance and operational updates.
Incident Supervision: Provide oversight and coordination during major emergency incidents, ensuring effective response and management of resources as needed.
Interdepartmental Collaboration: Work closely with other city departments to address issues that impact fire operations and emergency management planning.

- Serve as the direct supervisor for all fire stations and paid-on-call firefighters, ensuring readiness and efficient emergency response.
- Oversee the selection, procurement, maintenance, and repair of operational equipment and vehicles, ensuring all resources are in optimal condition.
- Conduct strategic planning to anticipate the short- and long-term needs of the department, assessing personnel, fire apparatus, and facility requirements.
- Implement ongoing training and development programs for operational staff to enhance service delivery and operational effectiveness.
Prevention Division:
- Administer daily fire inspection activities, ensuring compliance with the Minnesota State Fire Code and other relevant regulations.
- Create and manage educational programs aimed at increasing public awareness about fire prevention and community risk reduction strategies.
- Review and approve plans for fire safety systems, conducting thorough technical evaluations and ensuring they meet necessary codes and standards.
- Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential hazards in the community and develop appropriate mitigation strategies to enhance safety.
Training & Professional Standards Division:
- Oversee training and certification programs for fire department personnel, ensuring they align with current industry practices and standards of excellence.
- Collaborate with Human Resources to lead recruitment efforts that attract and retain high-quality paid-on-call firefighters.
- Represent the fire department in training initiatives with external agencies, ensuring partnerships enhance departmental capabilities.
- Develop and implement performance evaluation criteria for training initiatives to ensure continuous improvement and accountability among staff.
Qualifications
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.
Need to have:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid, unrestricted Minnesota driver's license
- Bachelor's degree in public safety, public administration, business administration, or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Eight years of progressively responsible public safety emergency response experience
- Four years of supervisory experience as a fire officer holding the rank of captain or higher.
- Experience in general management/administration; training programs, safety programs, and emergency planning and operations.
- Eligible to be licensed by the Minnesota Board of Fire Training & Education
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II
- NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations
- FEMA NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 certifications
- ICS 300 and 400 certifications
- NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Operator
- NFPA 1021 Fire Officer II
- NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor II
- Local Hazard Zone Command (Blue Card) Certification
- Minnesota Emergency Management Basic certificate
- Master's Degree or Executive Fire Officer Certification
- Previous experience in a Paid-on-call Firefighter model.
- Fire service experience in a city similar in size and make-up to Maple Grove.
- NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Technician
- NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator
- Certified Emergency Medical Technician, NREMT or MN EMSRB preferred
